Plastic Toys as Decorations

Is there any rule of thumb or best practices for using plastic toys as aquarium decorations? I found posts saying Legos were fine, but nothing about other types.

Could/should I soak them for an extended period of time? Boil them to see if paint/glue melts off?


This is what I want to put in my tank :

It's all plastic, made of a few pieces glued together and painted. There's nothing on the box about what type of plastic/glue/paint it uses but has a compliance line saying "Conforms to the safety requirements of ASTM F963-07"

wow. seriously WoW. lmao. I would do it... you dont know if they are BPA free... I try and make sure any plastic i put in my tank is BPA free.
btw those things are evil and vicious. lmao

Those are cool! Even if the paint flakes if they're sold for kids it'd be non-toxic. If you were really concerned I guess you could set up a 10 g with a few test fish.

I might soak em in bleach water for an hour, wash them off, and let them sit out in the sun for a day. After that give them another pure water wash and put them in your tank.

That is so awesome.... I've been wondering the same thing about plastic stuff, or if there is a coating of a glue or something you could put on something to make it tank safe.

I had a totally kick *** treasure chest I found in a thrift store, had faded gold paint and just looked fabulous, but after soaking it for a few days some of the paint bubbled off. =/

A lot of people use Krylon fusion paint to paint decorations for their tank. It's aqaurium safe and comes in a lot of colors
