Ok so you get online and start communicating on a public forum. You are now exposing yourself to thousands/millions of strangers.
Sometimes when I'm writing a post or starting a thread, I imagine that I'm at a podium speaking to a room or auditorium filled with people.

Now in the case of aquarium forums, we might sell , give away pet fish, advertise clubs, events or sell equipment. This requires disclosing our address to thousands/millions of strangers.
How precise do you feel safe about sharing your address...How about your name?./ Will you post it under your forum name?...Or possibly only share personal details though PM?.

I'll tell you, I went from one extreme to another in this area. I went from sharing nothing to sharing my address publicially and now I think I've found more of a balance. Except when it comes to aquarium forums.

I was almost going to meet up with a player on an online game. I had become quite the inviting "social butterfly" type. Then I found out they had an issue with assaulting people. But I already shared my address with them so I started to get really nervious. Luckily they lost interest when I made my self sparse from playing the game and faded into the background.

Then on another forum, I was giving away fish. I posted my address so others would know if they were in driving distance or not as I was not shipping. I noticed "red flags" in an interested poster who was in possible driving distance. DID I ever erase my personal details fast from that forum. I quit giving fish away there. I felt that same "shiver" go up my spine as when I almost invited a person with assault issues over for a social event.

shipping estimates or meetings can be narrowed down to just a zip code....

if you do agree to meet, meet in public, in daytime, at a busy place with lots of folks around. Your car parked far away....

you just have to be cautious. especially in this day and age

That's true!
It is very scary to think about sometimes.

I post regional area (New England) until I know the person better or have seen the person's interaction with others. I might give out city and state but I never give exact address unless a specific reason to do so. I have no fear for my own safety but I do have a family to keep safe.

If I must give out my address, I give it only to a single person via a slightly more secure form, and then wait and see what develops. I do not give out my home phone #. If for some reason I feel uncomfortable I choose a public place and have them meet me there.

that is so true. i never give out my information to except if i order something to be shipped. for local people i just ask them to meet me at a public place. i use the courthouse because i can see it from my house and that way if i'm taking too long or my bf gets nervous he can check on me.

... I stopped doing that when people started complaining.

lolololololo.

I was wary when I was selling and buying packages because of people seeing my full name and home address. But than I said, hey this person lives in another state... but that could be just paypal based address and not where they live now.

But than I started getting PM's for "pick up" thats when it started getting a bit creepy. I had a few pick ups and they all turned out to be nice people, not a crazy looking boomer from left 4 dead game.

Peek out the window, and when you see 10 guys come out of a car with duct tape, than call the popos!
