So, I just got a 90 gal with Magnum 350 pro cannister filter and heater ( I'm not sure of the brand), and an extra powerhead with sponge filter for $75. It's got a lot of lime build-up on it, but it'll be a cool project. The filter came live so I have it hooked up to my 20 gallon quarantine (empty) right now so that it can keep cycled

Here's the initial picture....I'll update you on the progression later.

Nice. But to keep that filter live you will need to feed it.

Planning on it...I'm putting extra flake in the QT right now...thinking about adding a drop of ammonia or vodka in there to make sure...any suggestions?

Find some plain white Ammonia (pure), and feed it that way. Try to shoot for 1-2ppm, and that should keep it ready for a real fish load.

Wow great deal! The filter alone is worth that much, way better then the two HOBs I got, nice tank as well. Your smart keeping the filter cycled, you'll be surprise how well an establish Magnum 350 can cycle a new tank. I used the Mag 350 from my 60 tanks to cycle my 120 tanks and everyone told me it would take at least a week, the tank only spiked to .25 PPM ammonia for 1 day with a fish stock of 14 and it was setup with just the blue bond sock, one batten under the sock and carbon.

Good deal:thumbsup:

Fogot to mention... The vinegar route is getting a bit tiresome...going to switch over to CLR since there's some pretty hardcore deposits. The house smells like pickles now.

Now for the plan:
Once I've tested to make sure the cycle is good with the filter, I'll move the pleco (it's the gibbiceps in my avatar) over since the 55 will become a little too small for him at maturity, add about 4 corys to the 55 and then start waiting for the new aquarium to fully stabilize so that I can go with a South American theme, and maybe discus (I hope!). I'm trying to find a nice black sand substrate (that won't break the bank) and a cool big driftwood branch that I can hang some plants and moss from.
I'll probably need to order another of the 48" 2X54 T5HO lights from fishneedit as well. I'm going to hunt for some local rock for rockwork as well.

I'm really digging the idea of doing a discus tank, but was wondering, other than the pleco, what species I should consider adding that will be safe with the discus.

As far as the plain white amonia route goes....does anyone do the raw shrimp thing anymore? I would think it would be way more simple to toss one raw shrimp in the tank and call it good. Unless your QT has something in it right now that could suffer from a rotting shrimp.

I did the vinager and CLR rout when I refebished my 120 CL tank, and after two days of soaking and rubbing and my arms falling off I found something 20X more effective and non-toxic. I still have a full bottle of useless CLR under my sink and your welcome to it if anyone want to pay shipping.
