better to keep it empty than place fish in it the would out grow the tank.

Leave it empty until you get new fish or need to treat one for disease.

Yes! You caught me....
I did know how to use a qt, but I just wanted to check.
The way I use a qt tank is as follows:
- Add the new fish
- Add kosher salt, and montior for disease
- After few days release fish into main tank
for sick fish I just do the same but add melafix.
****P.S I sometimes use aquarium salt.***********

QT should be done for a lot longer than just a few days...and salt is not necessary unless you're specifically treating for something like ich. And not all "sick" fish should be given melafix...which is a rather broad spectrum treatment.
