What is best practice for making a glass top

Actually, non tempered is what you want. Commercially made glass tops are non-tempered. When tempered glass breaks, it shatters into many pieces. Non-tempered glass will just crack. I've cracked a couple of glass tops and it was as simple as removing the two cracked pieces, having another piece cut, and replacing it.

I'd say it's cheaper too, but that's just my assumption, I've never actually priced tempered glass.

if you would have had temperd glass it wouldnt have broken at all as temperd glass is much stronger.

You can't make that statement for many reasons, first of which is that you don't know the circumstances in which it broke. Tempered glass would have still broken, and I would have had a bigger more dangerous mess to clean up. Tempered glass is stronger but it still breaks. I

I dunno
I have not been able to find tempered glass from the standard glass shops.

the tempering process is usually done after the glass has been cut as the tempering process makes the glass less workable.
all the glass shops I have visited sell regular glass and can have it tempered for you, if you want it..but the cost is in addition to the cut glass.

the cost is one reason aquariums (for the most part) only use tempered for the bottoms.

for me this makes the glass cost prohibitive.
and like jeffery.. I buy the glass replacements when I have broken the glass top.
the tempered glass would broken in my case too.

i got temperd for my tops and have droped them about 3 times and they havnet broken yet. my wife acedetnly steped on one of them and didnt break it. like i stated before if you are moving the glass around often it is allwase better to temper your glass. you wont cut and artary if it breaks and it is much stronger. shure you would have to get a broom out if it breaks but thats gota be better than cutting your finger half off and getting stitches right?

how would it have been more dangerous?? that is what temperd glass is designed for to be safe. it breaks in to many many tiny pices so you cant cut your self bad at all.

fish can't swallow 2 halves of a glass top. they can swallow tiny pieces of tempered glass, however.

I don't move the glass that often.
the tops are hinged and there is little need to 'move' the top.

getting tempered glass is just not cost effective for me.

iamvictor for you, tempered may be the way to go.

I am simply explaining that the process to get tempered can become an added cost and may not be available in many locations without special consideration.
regular glass it is much easier to find for the diy'er and can easily be cut by the glass shop.

Tho IME specialy glass shops can cost as much as the pre-made tops like versa top

agreed. :iagree:

im a journeyman glazier,,, glass by it self is stronger than you think...tempering makes it stronger to a degree.. ive hit a thick pc of tempered with a hammer and nothing but you tap a corner and BOOM... it also cost quite a bit more ,, glass shops dont sell it they have to order it to the size needed.. once its to that pt you cant change the size (cut it again).. so yes tempered is prob best way to go but more expensive.. i dont know what the heck you would be doing to bust it while its on the tank.. ive only busted glass.. when i set it on the ground and dont watch my step.. but cheap 1/8 inch single strength is fine too.. thats what they make aquarium tops out of
