Green algae won't go away...

They were on from 6am to 9pm. The tank is next to a wall of windows where the sun comes in for most of the day. I can't have less watts, it won't reach the plants. I added 72watts of light, but only after I had the issue, then a day later I realized it shouldn't be on until this stuff clears.

6am to 9pm?!?!?! 15hours??? There is your problem. Cut it to about 8hours.

With 15hours of light, algae will grow in any water.

a friend of mine had an algae bloom in his water and bought a UV filter and says that solved it. I have no experience at all with that, but though I'd pass it along and ask if anybody else knows anything about that...

Yah UV light bombards the spores to death ,parasites, and other nasties...it doesn't do a thing for water chemistry but its very good way to kill bad biological things in your water.

LOL at 75 watt and my guess power compacts....its borderline... but yes 8 hour is the general rule of thumb for photo periods. Depending on light intensity some lights are so strong less than 8 is used.

You all are fun to to share info with... im out of here for a while.

Good luck and I hope that you fix the issue soon.

Tanker is correct.

First and foremost you should cut your photoperiod down. A planted tank should have 8-10 hours...maybe 12 at most. Even with that low of lighting.

UV is good for killing the spores that do pass through the filter. Not so great at killing off attached algae.

Like I have already posted, I have already shortened the time the lights are on.

Yep, I saw you say that in your first post...then say that the lights were on for 15 hours...then nothing about what schedule they are currently on...

Ignore this...forgot it was green water.

So a UV would work, if you want to spend the money.

I don't see anything about trying a blackout yet...
