Hello, I'm new, and I just wanted some advice as to stocking my recently acquired 45 gallon tank. I haven't begun cycling it yet, but I am considering what I want to stock it with. I am planning on this being a planted tank. What would you suggest as a good centerpiece fish that I can stock the tank around?

Pearl Gouramis, Angelfish, Keyhole Cichlids

A single 3 spot gourami would be nice too. They come in a few color variations.

Gourami's are nice, maybe even a large shoal of Tiger Barbs.

Any of the above center-fish would be good. I would not add a school of TIger barbs, but maybe a large school (15-20) of tetras.

Thanks! I have considered both gouramis and angels, and I'm having trouble deciding between the two. Another question, what would be an interesting schooling fish I could add along with the angel or gourami? I would prefer something out of the ordinary but not too difficult to find.

Pearl and leopard danios are really nice looking fish. They go well with barbs (lots more out there than just tigers!) which can also be very striking - I am very fond of gold barbs which get lovely colors when they mature.

I would be inclined to go with barbs and danios if you choose gouramis, and larger tetras (such as bleeding hearts) if you go with angels.

I've got a 55 and I've got a Gold Gourami and it's perfect as my centerpiece. Lovely coloring, light spots trailing the fins, and it's a graceful swimmer.

The only drawback being it can be a bit on the aggressive side from time to time.
