Centerpiece fish for 45 gallon

i honestly dont know if theres any truth to what i said, it was just based on the jerk i had in my tank
i havent actualy had gouramis since

I agree that the rainbows you've mentioned would be a bit large to have a healthy school in your tank. Praecox rainbows would be an option though. They are a dwarf rainbow and I see them around here enough so they shouldn't be too rare. They are also known as Dwarf Neon Rainbows.

I do think they would be fine with an Opaline Gourami too. You could get the gourami last to prevent it from staking territories when there are few fish in the tank. It's still a bit of a cointoss on whether you'll get an aggressive fish or not. Same goes for angels. I believe that Pearl Gouramis are the safest non aggressive fish you've mentioned.

Maybe you could try an Opaline but talk it over with the store that if you have aggression you could maybe exchange or return it?

Good idea about checking with the store if you can return/exchange if the fish doesn't work out. It's always good to have a plan, whether it be moving to another suitable tank or returning to the store.

I believe rainbows are pretty active, so I would think that the larger ones would need more room. The smaller ones like the Praecox may be an option.

Oh, and I've never seen my honey gouramis even nibble on any of my plants (anubias, java fern and moss, ludwigia repens, bacopa monneiri, duckweed, frogbit, pennywort, variety of crypts, etc.) I'm not sure if the others would be more likely to eat herbage, and I know they are omnivorous. Perhaps they are just getting enough vegetable matter from the food mixes I feed.
