I'm not positive, but I have my Sarrs under CFLs right now. I'm pretty sure Jb has his there too along with his VFTs.
The pitchers found at the home improvement stores are usually Sarracenia spp. and they do not need a dormant period as far as I know. The ones I picked up from Lowes were S. purpurea.
I wasnt going to post another forum link here, but i saw another post where someone else did. So for all things newt/salamander you need to look through this forum: http://www.caudata.org/
There are people that breed and sell different species so you wont need to settle for something they sell at the LPS.

I know that you can keep Sarracenia seedlings under constant light with no dormancy but I'm pretty sure mature plants do require some sort of dormant period.
Yep. Sarrs are North American species by definition, so they do need a dormancy period. (Incidentally, I think most VFTs are N. American too) Usually around 3-4 months. VFTs are usually recommended about the same duration. Putting them outside should be perfecto, but depending on where you live, you may want to insulate the container to avoid freezing as much as possible. Thanks! I'll check it out later. I might might end of getting this pitcher plants (gotta get name and stuff) that I saw sitting next to my VFTs. Quikc question, would they need to have a dormant stage during the winter months?
Before I create a foam background, I'm gonna test out the filter if it will actually work from that heigh and see how fast the flow rate is.
STAY TUNED!![]()
Soon we will have assimilated all of TF and claimed it for AC!Thanks! Im a member now on TF. I asked a question about anoles.. but someone ended up telling me that VFTs and Sarracenia sp. need sunlight. Is that necessary or could that be achieved in a fluorescent set-up with 60 watts of light?
Yep. As far as sunlight being necessary... I don't buy it. Hell, My plants are in the basement. They haven't seen actual sunlight since they've been with me. LOL. I've seen recommendations of 40 watts of fluorescent tubes, so it seems your 60 should be fine. I have seen a definite correlation between light intensity and growth rate; and also with coloration. The more light, the more colors the plant will priduce.I'm not positive, but I have my Sarrs under CFLs right now. I'm pretty sure Jb has his there too along with his VFTs.
^^^ Yep. 3-4 months of cold and shorter photoperiod. There are several methods to accomplish it, which it sounds like you already know.I know that you can keep Sarracenia seedlings under constant light with no dormancy but I'm pretty sure mature plants do require some sort of dormant period.
As I said, I don't think sunlight is strictly necessary. Also, most sarrs are going to need essentially the same sort of dormancy period as the VFTs. I think most will outgrow a 10g rather quickly though.Thank you so much for the link! I'm gonna check it out! Thanks
Thanks. I was on TF two days ago and they think they will need sunlight and they won't look as nice.
I saw some Sundews and Sarracenia sp. that I found at my local garden store so I'll give those a try. Does Home Depot have CP plants?
That's good to know! Thanks. I think my VFTs are pretty young so they might be okay with fluorescent light but will probably need to be moved outside or something. I'll try to stay away from Sarracenia sp. until I have more experience.
Pappy and x916krew seem to have you pretty well sorted out. :bowing: I thought I'd put a couple thoughts out there.

I can't wait to see more pics!
I was actually thinking about that. I don't know anything really about newts so it's hard to say for sure. I would (at the very least) stay away from the low lying ones like d. spatulata or adelae, but some of the more upright ones (scorpiodes, filliformis) might work. Those would also make sense in terms of space since they grow up, not so much out, but they tend to be pretty delicate.
Right on... sounds cool!Newts go in and out of the water but I don't know to what extent and how long. I'll probably end up putting the Sundews on the end of the tank furthers from where they would end up crawling in and out. And raise the soil there. I'll put the VFTs directly under the lights so it should all work out. Will have some sphagnum moss for the newts to crawl around on and stuff. Should look pretty good when it's done. But i gotta work on the background and the underwater part more.
