took the snail-o plunge...

Betta are mostly carnivores, and aside from the occasional peas, I've never seen them show interest in veggies... (well, they love snello, but who doesn't? :D)

I'd cut the veg into chunks or slices, skewer with a fork to weight down. I've also frozen slices and thawed in a small bit of water in the microwave, sinks easily. I'd be very surprised if the betta showed interest.

what camera and lens are you using? I need good pics for my presentations and the lens I am using just isn't cutting it.

I use Olympus equipment, and have done for more than 30 years. Ugg, that really makes me sound old...Anyhow, I am currently using an E-Volt 620 body and a Zuiko (Olympus) 35mm macro lens. The Olympus uses a sensor that is 1/2 the size of a 35mm frame, and is therefore the equivalent of a 70 mm lens. I am very happy with the camera (probably the best digital SLR that Olympus has made) and the lens which is tack sharp. Olympus also has a 50 mm macro lens (equivalent to a 100 mm) that is superb and considered an even better lens. But it provides magnification of 1:2 whereas the 35mm gives 1:1. As far as I am concerned, the more magnification I can get, the better. Plus, the 35mm focuses much closer which I prefer for aquarium photography in order to reduce the amount of water between the lens and subject and get me closer to the glass.

For lighting, I just use the on-camera flash—I am a big believer in the KISS principle. I use a clip-on diffuser on the flash which distributes the light better and allows me to focus closer to the subject.

Is cucumber also safe? It's pretty much the same right?

I tried cucumber for the first time earier this week. It sat on the bottom for 24 hours and nothing seemed interested. I was going to take it out when a zebra nerite found it, and that was it. The snail sat on it all day and munched. I think maybe a couple of shrimp might have helped clean-up.

I use Gerber green beans baby food for mine and my platies and cories loved it. Also it's really high in calcium (well 6%) so IMHO it seems like a good choice that everyone loves

I make it for my catfish (plecos) and cories. I will add protein based fish foods to the gelatin and baby food. They love it. Green baby food *usually* has a higher calcium content so that is better for baby plecos and snails.

I use Nikon equipment, I reaelly need a macro lens! Any chance I could use some of your photographs (with credit given) in my presentations next weekend?

What is the presentation?

I am speaking at two clubs in Pittsburgh next weekend on invertebrates and nano fish. My laptop got wiped out a few months ago (with most of my pictures) and my flash drive with the back up somehow got erased (i am blaming my kids).I sent youa pm with more info :)
