All the fish are alive and well, except...

If the fungus is worsening, yes, you might need to euthanize him. I'm sorry to have to say that.

As for why they keep getting fungus, did you get all your bettas from the same store? If so, it could be bad stock and/or bad care. If you try again, definitely find a new source. You might want to look for a local hobbyist breeder, or contact the ACers who have been breeding bettas recently.

ALL of the bettas have come from different stores. This is why I am so baffled! I have done everything right, but I keep killing them, and its breaking my heart.
I checked in at home today and apparently he is not doing so well, so I will have to euthanize him tonight. :(
Its so frustrating too, because I love the lil guys! they are so beautiful! They have some half moon bettas at this one store, and I would love to get one, but they are $20 and I refuse to pay that for a betta if its going to suffer the same fate as the others have.

My 5th Betta!
I dont get it!
All the fish in the 55 gallon tank are doing fabulous! no problems whatsoever..
all the fish in the 10 gallon tank, are doing great (3 guppies, and 1 aquatic dwarf frog), except the betta!
As some of you may remember, this is my 5th betta, and ALL 5 of them have gotten fungus.
Granted, the first 4 were either in betta tanks, or in a newly set up 10 gallon tank... but this guy I bought after I learned the hard way about cycled tanks and water changes, and how betta DO NOT like those little **** betta tanks!! So this guy (who I called 5 because he is my fifth, and I didnt want to give him a 'real name' until I saw he was gonna make it passed 1 week - unlike the others) I bought AFTER my tank was cycled, and have done the proper water changes and such... but 3 mornings ago, I discovered that while fluffy stuff on his chin. So I immediately started treating him with fungus medicine. At first, on day one, he would just houver at the top of the tank... now, day 3 (as of yesterday) some of the fluff has fallen off, and he is swimming around.. but then seems to get tired and goes back to the top corner of the tank. Im continuing the medicine, and hoping for the best.
But after 5 failed betta attempts, Im ready to give up on the **** things! They are my favorite tropical fish, but for some reason I cant keep them alive!! Does anyone have any advice??

Sincerely,
Betta killer 5.0 :(

-I should add.. there is driftwood in this tank, which oozes, and makes the water appear orangeish in color, most of which isnt noticable until I do water changes.... could that be hurting the lil guy??
the other fish and frog seem to love it.. they even peck away at it....

This sounds like columnaris, columnaris is a bacterial infection that looks a lot like fungus which causes it to often be misidentified as fungus. I would treat it with a maracyn and maracyn two combo.

If it makes you feel any betta (nice pun !), I can't keep them alive either. I have had 3 or 4, singularly, at least, at one time in my community tank, and they have all died. No visible signs of stress or disease, just dead. I will be in a pet store, and see a nice one in their little bowls, and try again. Always the same results. So I quit trying and have accepted the fact that I can't keep them. Same with CRS, by the way. Can't keep them alive to save my life. Had a couple of humdred, a handful at a time, and they all died. So I surrendered, and now I stick with fish I can keep alive. Good luck.

Here is a pic of a BEtta with a very advanced case of columnaris I found while searching google:

That is exactly what 5 looked like.
I got home from work last night and he was dead, and covered in that white fuzz.
If infact it was columnaris, that would explain why the fungus medication didnt work, on ANY of them.
DO you know what causes columnaris??

Fungus medications don't work on columnaris because columnaris is not a fungus. Columnaris is a bacterial infection.
