What is wrong with my Convicts!

Please read my first post, i have 2 planting pots cave, 2 caves made of stacked rocks and one smaller cave ornament. Im not going to get another tank, itll cost >$100. This is a nice heated tank and i enjoy it. PLastic bins also make good home. Incase you havent noticed, the sides of rivers are not see through. Many fish farms have their fish breed in concrete pond that are not see through too.:duh:

just because there are caves there doesn't mean they will spawn. They need substrate to dig pits in. The parents will dig pits through out the tank and then move the fry to different ones through out the day. Once they spawn, if they do, they will become more aggressive and the male will most likely terrorize the female, until he kills her. Or eat the babies. If the babies make it to the free swimming stage the turtle will be happy to gobble them up as a nice snack. I hope you aren't planning on breeding the convicts for money because there isn't any money to be had in breeding them.

FYI, Please give me advice that dont require me to spend >$20.

get rid of the convicts or don't expect a spawn.

I feed convict fry to my Malawi predators, Ballyhoo has a valid point no substrate and a turtle in a breeding rubbermaid tub spells disaster and you will be lucky to get a quarter for a convict juvie, Get rid or move the turtle and then place some substrate in the tub, turtles produce way to much fecal to ammonia and are extremely messy plus they are avid fish eaters.. Just sayin..

Im feeding some fry to pred too if i have them. Breeding the cons are secondary really. Ill keep my turtle where she is and cons too.

You obsviously dont get the point of this thread do you

To me it seems as if your trying to make a quick buck, which is not going to happen. Not to sound rude but you just expect your fish to breed and produce fry with the snap of your fingers, they dint even have a proper environment as of now. I'd be more worried about getting a correct tank, stock, heat, and diet before you jump into breeding. Breeding any cichlid will cost you money, if you don't expect to spend money on your fish in order to insure them the best life then you truly should not have them, fish are demanding pets, maybe not as much as dogs or cats but they need dedication you should not have chosen them as pets of you don't want to spend money on them. I'm not exactly a rich man I'm lower middle class I don't have a lot of money at all, but I still spend at least 40-60$ a month on food amd supply for my fish and tank, I set aside money from my budget in the very start with just a single 55 gallon I wanted to be bake to afford these amazing creatures, you should reconsider if your not willing to spend money on them. Ok I'm done lecturing for tonight.

Im trying to breed convicts. I have a pair. Im not sure if they paired up because sometimes the follow each other and other times they hide alone and when the other comes up to he/she, he/she will flash at he/she:help: Both are 3 inches. Male is quite washed out. Doesnt have red belly, Longer fins, more aggressive and greedy. Female has good colors, red belly. I feed them Hikari cichlid gold, Market shrimp, turtle pellets (high in fiber and stuffs) but they dont eat lettuce. Sometimes they dine on turtle poo too :silly: Ammonia are <0.2 ppm i dont check nitrite and nitrate. The tank has been running for half a year now. 50% water changes every week. They live in a 54 gallon rubbermaid container with a turtle and 2 rosy red minnow. There is 2 terracotta pot, 2 caves made from stacked rocks, a small cave ornament. No substrate. The convict pair has been in the tank for 6 weeks now. No egglaying and breeding :angryfire: WHY!!!????

please explain how I don't get the point of this thread. I've addressed the issues you presented, I'm sorry it wasn't what you want to hear.
