Mafia Game Strategy 101

Jpap, do you know of any formats, aside from the Assassins in the Palace, that can run well with few players?

Mad, I know you'd mentioned doing one with aliases in a chat format that could run in one evening. Something like that could be a lot of fun and something different to change things up.

:uhoh: That is so totally me...especially when it falls into place soooo perfectly. And then I talk myself into believing it's totally true, when in reality it's not. :footinmouth:

There are a ton of smaller formats at mafia scum but the problem is that the games tend to take way longer than anyone here has the patience for, myself included. If we ran them like normal setups they would be quick but not sure if they would be long enough. Mad has a good grasp of converting those ones into AC friendly games so he's the one to talk to...

You come up with a wild theory? No! I have never seen that happen!

Is there a shipping and handling charge to have air holes drilled in the box so said player is alive on delivery?

Chill you crack me up. I truly will miss playing in the games with you. Things are really busy in RL and I haven't said this in a thread before because I didn't want to seem like a crotchety old man; but I read the games and have seen comments from the other vets so I no I am not alone in thinking this. Until the games improve, and that isn't the format but the players. Not all just the immaturity and not posting except to say why they aren't posting. I will not be back.

I hated coming to that decision because I love the mafia games. I really hope that this helps get them back on track.

I really hate to hear that Wiz, you're one of my favorite people to hit. I'm taking a break myself. My hope with creating this thread was that the level of play will be elevated if people have some help on basic strategy. I will return if the play returns to the maturity level it was before. I hope you will consider doing so as well.

We have been very busy and will be for a bit yet. I do still read the games and will return when I have the time to devote to playing as you know it does require a fair amount of time to reread and pull posts, provided we can get them back to what they were last winter.

One of the things I really have been missing is the post game analysis and chat. Lately the scum den gets posted and everyone runs off to read it then they disappear and the thread dies.

Kashta said that they didn't used to even post the link to the scum den. After the game there would be conversation asking "why did you do that?" etc.

It's hard for the noobs to learn this game when stepping up is likely to get you lynched. If all the vets pack it in I don't see things progressing. My comment about nostalgia implied that the game may not be the only thing that changed. Vets become jaded and the game becomes less interesting. While it's true that people don't participate as much, we have to realize when they do they draw fire so yeah they keep their heads down.

I toyed with the idea of packing it in myself but who am I kidding I still need a fix.

I don't know how cumbersome this would be but what about some sort of mentor/protégé system where an inexperienced player gets hooked up with a non-playing vet. Could be fun and challenging. Could be done so that the other players don't know who's coaching who. Gives the noob some insight and allows the vet a chance to play without quite the same burden to dig, and also gives the vet a chance to play without all the old perceptions they carry coming into play. How often do we see the same vets being killed off early because they're a threat - could be a chance to play without that worry.

Chill, I think that is a great idea. Maybe any non-playing vets interested in doing that could PM whoever is running the game. The game mod could then pair vet with noob. The one issue I see is if the noob doesn't commit to playing (i.e. never posts or responds in the chat or whatever), it could be very frustrating for the vet.

That is why the alias game came into play.

Frankly the game might be better if we always used aliases for that 1 reason. But until players pull their own weight the most vocal will always be the 1st ones hit or lynched.

the op thought i cheated lol
OMG, I remember that....wow that was a long time ago, wish you would try again ;)
And another... once the game has started, don't PM half the players outside the thread just to say "Hi." :)
AHAHAHA!!! Well, it does say no PMing other about the game....Hi isn't really about the game:perv:

Really, as far as strategy...that is something that varies from game to game, and quite honestly I don't have one. I just play and think as I go (nope may not always get me far) but that is the way I play and enjoy the game.

As for reading the "dens", I can't say I always do that either I may skim through them...but for me, when they started posting the dens it kinda took something away for me in the game itself. Yes, it is fun to see what everyone has said and how things went...but IDK, just I know myself personally I try to not say everything I think in the den anymore, knowing at the end everyone will see and know what I was thinking and why...naw I'd rather keep things to myself then let every player know what I was thinking and how I came up with everything during the game. That was one thing that made being on a team with someone you hadn't played on team with before more interesting, you didn't know how they thought until you played with them...IDK, just me I guess.

LMAO....unless they keep forgetting to log in and out and post with their actual SN over and over:laugh:

Kash is correct, once in a while someone may post a link...but pretty much it was never posted. The mod didn't have access to the den either. We made our own chat rooms, talked in IM, emailed each other the mod and other players had nothing to do with it and didn't know what was said in the end.
Also, all the ghost chats we never had that before now it is in every game. Yeah, its fun to feel like your still in the game, and it's fun to have the mod tell ya things you wouldn't of known until the end....but dying and not finding out till the end of the game, is all part of the game. It is a reason to try even harder to not get lynched.... now it's really not that big a deal to die, because you still get to "play", interacting, talking and getting invest's...just took more away from the game IMO. I can see in a game where maybe the dead players end up with something in the game (like a hit, invest) but just to have a place to continue playing more or less...I don't really see it.

Another thing I personally see no reason for. We have never had to "babysit" the new players, it is how you learn. You jump in and do it, we didn't have hand holding, and pity parties for new players. You jumped in got your butt handed to ya a couple times, learned and kept going. Don't mean to sound bad toward others, but come on if ya wanna play ya just do it. When new players get on a foot ball team do the other players of opposing teams (or their team mates) hold their hand and take it easy on them because they are new...not really.
