I know fish bowls are frowned upon but...

thank you for the link :)

EDIT: I could get small endlers (they where on the list) and RCS

ok, did my research guys :) I think 3 RCS and 3 endlers? I have actually always liked endlers xD but their size puts me off lol they are so small!
what about plants then? java fern maybe? I have never had a plant in my tank but this bowl would be quite a experiment tank the way this is going lol

I would not put any fish in a bowl that size. I would go with just the shrimp. You might want to try java moss in the bowl as shrimp love it and it is very easy to grow.

I would also read this thread which describes the cycling process which is one of the most important parts of setting up an aquarium/bowl: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84598

An update on the homemade canister filter - I managed to put it together in about fifteen-twenty minutes. I'm chronically thumb-fingered but had no problems, it went really fast. I'm waiting for the sealant to cure now so I haven't tested it yet, but it was surprisingly easy.

I understand wanting to have fish in there, but the options are limited in something that size.

I would not put Endler's in an unheated tank. They don't do well when cold.

I have, as an experiment, grown out platy fry to ~3/4" in unheated 1 gallon planted containers...2-3 per container. They did OK, probably didnt grow as fast as if they were in a big heated tank.

My thoughts...lo-tech, easy maintenance fishbowl...
Unheated
air driven sponge filter
Java moss
3 female RCS
2-3 platy fry

Just run the sponge filter in an established tank for a week to seed it first.

You'd have to watch the shrimp population in case it starts to grow...and you'll want to pull out/replace the platy fry at ~ 3/4"/2cm.

Platy fry grow into adults pretty fast IME.

There really is no point of having to replace the platy fry all of the time, because then you have to find somewhere to put them when they get bigger.

To be honest, I didn't even bother reading through the whole thread. They're 'frowned upon' for a reason. Fish tend to die in them. Yeah, maybe you could raise a few snails, but what's the point? It might be a little more of an investment, but head out to a pet store and by a 10g tank kit. They're like 40 USD which is 25 pounds. You would have so many more options.

Point well taken. It does take a few months for them to grow to 3/4" , and I see Sparkxx has plenty of room for them (empty 25g?). I guess it depends on how often the relatives are visited...if once a week, no problem...if once a year, not such a good idea.
