freshwater puffers?????? community tank????

Back before I was new into fish keeping, I had a dwarf puffer with 2 guppies and a goldfish in a 2.5 hex (I still hate myself for that). Not suprisingly the puffer made short work of the goldfish and a guppy. He later died because he wouldn't eat flakes. The last remaining guppy was my oldest fish ever, she lived 4 years.

i'm sorry if my comments were unneccesarily rude, I just don't tolerate animal cruelty.

So explain why it's wrong, sometimes people just don't know it can harm the animal. Insulting someone isn't going to change anything, in fact it makes them more likely to not listen to you.

^+1. Sometimes people will do bad things without knowing it. On the other hand, if a person is intentionally cruel, I think it is acceptable to rude to them.

Personally, I'd like to think 'suffocating and heavily stressing a fish to the point that it triggers a potentially fatal last-ditch defense mechanism' for someone's own amusment should qualify as a no brainer on animal cruelty.


But the average person probably wouldn't realize that that is what the action basically was. So it probably would be too much to assume it doesn't need explaining. :irked:

yes and how many people keep goldfish in bowls...just because something is obvious to you doesn't mean it is obvious to the rest of the population.

It is always better to explain than attack. Attacking gets you no where but further behind, and in the end doesn't solve the issue.

Oh I was agreeing with you. It should be obvious, but with fish the view seems to be that they are more of toys or decorations rather then living things. Most people wouldn't see getting a puffer to puff as cruel, even though it takes making the fish think it is about to die.

Dwarf puffers ("pea puffers") are good with almost any fish. I had one for a year in a 55g community tank with no issues. My figure 8 puffer on the other hand would take on a fish 2ce his size and eat his eyes (not pretty)

This may have worked for you, but is not the standard. I would also be curious why this configuration lasted only a year.

The puffer that did all the damage in my tank was a pea-puffer.

I had 3 dps in a 10g for about 3 months with 3 panda cories with no issues. Over the course of one night they shredded the cories to the point where I didn't think they'd recover. They've been known to shred fish many, many times their own size.
