I was wondering if one can use the "Poly-fill" in big bags from the deparment stores for filter material.
The reason I ask is that I don't know if the material has been impregnated with fire retardent chemicals...
What to you think + what do you know?:wall:

I use it. My bag says 100% Premium Polyester Fiberfill on it. I believe there are kinds that have the chemicals you mention but it should say on the bag.

This is what my bag looks like.

Thanks Tay,
We live in an area where there is little access to aquarium equipment....everything is 1-2 hours driving time away. Walmart would be the only store where I can get this locally.

Poly-fil is awesome....oh...and cheap. :)

As long as it doesn't say fire and/or mildew resistant, should be good to go.

I'm kind of in the same boat. It takes at least 45 min to get to a big box pet store. I do a lot of shopping online for things like filters and such.

Even if it does say flame retardant you are ok as it is made with iron and not chemicals. It might raise your Ph slightly but it never affected mine nor the fish.

I had contacted the company a couple years ago since it is within driving distance, and learned that they do not use a chemical that could harm animals or people specifically babies. It is their "trade secret" how they infuse with iron. I have been using it exclusively as my filter media for about 4 years now, Blue/white bag "Poly-fil" brand.

Thanks 2 All,
I fill check out our only large department store, Waltmart, in town for this particular brand...am housebound with a foot stress fracture...
