Saw some chayote in the supermarket so I picked one up to try feeding to my fish. It's supposedly rich in vitamins A, B, and C, and amino acids. I was just wondering if anyone else has fed this veggie.

No, but I tried feeding them peyote once, and they all swam funny and kept running into the glass for a while... :evil_lol:

It's a type of squash, what can be bad. I've eaten it myself. It's good in stews.

I've never used it, but you may be able to get your fish to develop a taste for it. I have cooked and eaten it before. It is a pretty hard squash (much harder than zucchini), so you are going to have to soften it up pretty good before giving it to your fish.

i dont know maybe a quick research on the compounds contained in chayote could be an interesting find if it does turn out to be good for fish.

the thing is that just like in african birds-avocado, dogs-chocolate, cats onions, etc, humans can eat things that are toxic to other animals.

The BNs keep jumping on and off of it. I didn't soften it up at all, I'll see how much of a dent they can put in it as it is.

The only things I can find concerning fish and chayote are recipes...

I already feed sweet potato, figured I'd try something new to add in the mix. I do think it's tough for them to chew, as not much of a dent has been put in them. I may try blanching it and seeing what happens.

Oh with the avacado and African Birds is a bit off. Avacado is toxic to all parrots regardless if there from Africa, Australia, South America, ect... Also Dogs are not affected by chocolate as badly as birds are with Avacado. Small amount of chocolate will not harm a dog and by small I mean a teaspoon or two with say a dog the size of a beagle. Another comparison would be dogs with Raisins or Avacado which is also toxic to dogs.

Hmmm onions are toxic to cats??? Wow that's good to know he he he. LOL. Never studied toxins which are harmful to cats but not humans. I don't like cats.
