My husband and I have been taken for a ride it seems. Friday our car broken down, more money than its worth to fix (needs transmission rebuild) and we were in a hurry to get a new running vehicle. We got a 98 jeep cherokee saturday night and the other day I noticed that something didnt add up. the mileage on the inspection sticker was lower than the mileage listed for the next oil change being due on a sticker that was from 09. How does that work? not to mention the mile on the title vs the mileage and date on the sticker suggested that the car was driven 7,000 miles in just the past month. I used to come close to that but I was driving almost 100 miles to work and then again back every day. Anyways, I was suspicious, so I checked and the vin on the car does not match the vin on the sticker. I want to call the cops but that wont get our money back. Im thinking of calling the guy and threatening to turn him in if he doesnt give us our money back and take back his POS. I dont want to register the car if there's something up with it, but in the meantime I dont have a vehicle I can legally drive. If he stole a sticker off something to put on this to sell, that makes me think it wont pass inspection and we dont have the money to get it repaired to pass. So what should I do? just call the cops in the first place or talk to the guy?

Call the guy, explain it to him, and then call the cops.

You didn't look at the odometer when you purchased the car? What's the difference in terms of mileage between the sticker and odometer?

sticker issued a month ago = 121,xxx od = 171,xxx. 50,000 difference...... : | this isnt the first time my husband screwed us by not taking a good look at a car, our last car he noticed 30 seconds after we drove away the check engine light was on. He always gets so excited about all the good things, that he doesnt check for bad things.

call the buy, politely explain to him that you don't want the car and you'd like your money back but be firm, also, if possible record your phone call. Immediately collect any evidence you can, i.e. any paperwork passed between you and him, photographs of the odometer and sticker, make sure they're watermarked with date and time. Don't drive the vehicle. If he doesn't take your politely offered opportunity to clear up the situation without involving the police then contact them ASAP. Most states have detailed "anti-lemon" laws and anything he's done to alter the vehicle's odometer is a crime by every "anti-lemon" law I've read. Make sure you move fast and document though, you'll have him by the short'n'curlys.

Call the police and call a lawyer.

oh yeah +1 to the lawyer thing...sue 'em!

if I had money for a lawyer, i wouldnt be buying an old jeep of a scumbag on CL for $1600 lol. but it was a nice thought. Ive asked my husband to call the guy and see if we cant scare him into getting our money back. hopefully he hasnt spent it all already. I would rather not deal with the police, but if I he doesnt make it right on his own, then im going to have to.

There can be many legal reason for the difference, broken windshield replaced, tach/odometer changed, etc. You need to give the seller a chance to explain before you call the cops. If the explanations don't add up file a report of fraud. Make him prove with receipts.
