Crazy Betta Darting Around

I'm treating him for infection. The vase is a gallon, I am very busy to do 3 water changes a week. I never had this problem with one of my older bettas which lived in a gallon vase for 5 years. Test kits are not cheap where I live and well I don't know how to use them.

I think that the above quote may be part of the reason. You stated several times that you kept a betta in a 1 gallon vase for five years. I'm glad it's just a temporary measure and you realize now that vases are not proper betta homes.

I learned years ago not to buy a fish that I knew would eventually outgrow my tank, with the intent to buy a bigger one at that time. Life gets in the way and sometimes we don't follow through for various reasons and the fish suffers. I also wouldn't buy a fish and bring it home unless I had it's proper home waiting for it. Just some helpful advice so perhaps you won't get in this situation again.

Best of luck to you.

I just finished changing the water and cleaning out the vases. the black betta seemed to have had fin rot, but It's hard to tell and now his tail is regrowing. My white one had the same problem but I had no idea they both had it. :[ They are more active now then they were last week. If you want me to post pics of them I can, if you want. But I think when I got my black betta, he could of had fin rot but I'm not sure.

ammonia in an unfiltered bowl/vase is the biggest culprit of fin rot in bettas. more frequent water changes (daily, as suggested) are what is needed to get these bettas' fins back to healthy.

you need to change their water 100% daily.

this thread makes me do this: :wall:

Daily water changes don't stress them unless you don't use the same water temperature. You clearly have absolutely no concern for the life and wellbeing of your fish. Nobody is going to give you the answer you want to hear ("Vases are fine!") because they ARE NOT! It is owners like you who keep buying vases to keep their betta fish in, that keep pet stores thinking that it is ok, and making a profit off of it! Sorry that the truth hurts, but you are doing the wrong thing, and everybody on here is trying to tell you that.

I think it's time to just throw our hands up in the air and walk away.:uhoh:

I just bought a 10 gallon tank and filled it, putting the fish from the 5 gallon into it. Going to make some dividers in a few days and put my other 3 bettas into the tank. It's heated and I have a filter in the tank, live plants{have to buy more] and a place to hide.
