Ikea pretty much sells RTA garbage. Garbage if you are use to real wood, professionally constructed stuff. Or just about everything Ikea fails to carry. Let's face it, Ikea stuff won't be worth handing down like the good stuff is. Ikeas stuff is all MDF or particle board.

Just because a company is large doesn't mean it's all that good. Walmart proves that beyond a shadow of a doubt. Well so does Mikkie D's but that's another story.

Thanks for all the ideas and information. My dad was a construction worker for 20+ years so I think he knows how to build it. I'll show him your ideas and photos to give him different ways of building it. Plus I haven't told him one of the tanks is going to be 600lbs. I just asked if he could build me a stand.

Why 600 lbs on one tank?

BTW here is another thread on what you want to do. This one does use 4 x 4 but just for ease of construction not strength.

Roger that.
You could, not that you would have to, put that tank on the bottom level.
If you did put it on the top you could also use a 1/4" plywood skin. That doesn't add to the shear strength but helps prevent racking. I would be more concerned with that then it breaking apart.
 
I was going to put the sewellia tank in the middle as I plan to have the canister filters under. Canisters on the bottom level, 40g sewellia tank in the middle, and the other 40g on top, was my idea but not sure.
