Returning to Fish keeping with Fluval Edge

6-10 CPD (start with 6, and then up the count until I don't think they'll be comfortable if I add another) and a nerite. I don't have the tank you have, and haven't seen one that was set up and stocked, so I don't know how comfortable the fish will seem in it. If in doubt, get fewer fish.

Or ember tetras. Or chili rasboras. Or some neon rasboras (while I'm partial to the yellow with the black background on my 55, the blues are pretty outstanding as well), but they're not common in the hobby.

Actually, let me ask you all this: What would you stock a 6 gallon tank with if it were yours?

Well that's almost easy for me at the moment, as I'm in the middle of setting up and edge as well. I had a setback because I let the evaporation drop the water level which led to the HOB outflow splashing and burning out most of the led's :( I ordered a replacement but decided to get the light bar for the twelve gallon(same size light bar, it just has more led's and a bigger power supply) and it ended up being backordered so I lost some of the plants and am just starting to get things going again.

I used organic potting soil as a base and capped it with Eco-complete. I used some small seiryu stone for hardscape. I would definitely get the prefilter sponge from fluval if you haven't already, otherwise you'll start losing shrimps to the filter intake.

I've planted it so far with Marsilea minuta, Blyxa japonica, and cryptocoryne wendtii. It still needs some work, but I'm being cautious about adding too much too quickly since it's such a challenging tank to work in. The only livestock I've added so far are Malaysian Trumpet snails(to keep the substrate worked up, and 8 Red Rili shrimp. If things go well and the plants take root and fill in I'll be adding some Thai micro crabs. If that works I may add a few fish or maybe not. If I add fish it'll be a choice between either a school of Celestial pearl danios, or Pseudomugil gertrudae. If I just want an interesting fish and not a school I might go for something in the Badis family. Plenty of time before I have to make that decision though.

Have fun whatever you do.

cool tank! i had the fluval spec that i housed my betta (RIP) in and some ghost and RCS. surprisingly i used the petco packaged plants to some dwarf grass...a couple scarlet temples...and some moneywort all the plants are currently growing like crazy almost a year later. they have since been transfered into my 1.5 gallon ghost shrimp tank and my panted bowl and the remains are all in a 20 gallon high grow out tank no live stock just plants.

****!

Pardon my french, but I did a 75% water change (treated tank for chlorine before adding tap water) and added 6 shrimp, and 5 java fern.

upon topping off water, I ran the tests.

ph- 7.6
ammonia- 0
nitrites- 5ppm!!!
nitrates- between 80-160ppm!!!!!!!!!!!!

What in the hell happened?!

Could be as simple as the readings were really off the charts, and you're looking at more real numbers now. It's going to be a lot of frequent water changes if you're going to save those shrimp.

I don't understand. They read perfect last night minus ammonia, which was 0 this morning. I'm going to let everything settle and retest before bed. WTF?!?!

I think a retest of the water is needed. It could be as simple as you accidentally checked them wrong. Or the cycle isnt yet complete. But deffinately recheck and do a WC as needed because now some livestock is involved.
