I need some upper tank swimmers? Would it help to add floating plants?

I currently have in my 56 gallon tall tank.

Bottom Dwellers:

Red Tail Shark
6 Cories

Other:

2 German Blue Rams
6 Neon Tetra


They are all healthy, they just stay near the bottom or lower mid levels. Once in a great while they will venture up, but I need some fish guaranteed to tick around the top.

I need fish suggestions that will bring color and upper movement into the tank. I want all peaceful fish and no fin nippers if possible.
 
Pearl Gouramis, Zebras Danios, Hatchet fish, all come to mine as surface fish.

Golden Dream Killi's will stick near the top, for the Gouramis provide floating cover.

I agree with Agro. The killies would be bullies, and guppies will use all of the tank, but you'll have to get either all males or deal with the fry (though the rams might do that for you).

More neons will make them bolder and more active, but really, most fish don't hang out at the surface. Hatchets will, but they're not very colorful, and must have a covered tank.
 
Killies like golden wonders can & will eat anything that fits in their mouths...like neons. Floating plants can help a lot, I liked Indian fern, ceratopteris cornuta. I agree with tanker's list, all but gouramis can be jumpers, floating plants help with that too. Maybe dwarf neon blue rainbows? Not sure with neons when they get adult size.
 
I like the little honey dwarf Gouramis. You can get the Gold morph if you want bright color. 5 or so should be a good number and adding floating plants will make them all that much happier.
They do swim all over the tank but spend maybe half the time in the upper half. Floating plants should encourage them to go to the top more.
There is always the chance a male may decide to build a bubble nest at the surface and could become aggressive towards tankmates when he picks a mate.
