29G Shrimp Tank

Whoa, your PC is crazed! Have you done a virus and malware scan recently? I know you were having other troubles too.

I am going to bed now, so sleepy! I hope to find some votes on the wood or any comments, critical or otherwise. And I hope not to find 27 pages of repeated replies.

I'm liking the first option best. Both look nice, but the first just appeals more to me. Gotta ask, did you plant wisteria in the front?

LOL, I just recently found more info on the marimo balls and found out it's algae. Guess that's why it's supposed to be good at out competing the bad algae! I was just surprised Mr Bristlenose hadn't dislodged the little bit on the mopani.

Thanks for you input! Yes, it is wisteria in the front. I just stuck it there till I had the wood arranged, then I can move it to the back.

Marimo is tough stuff! Once attached I don't think even a BN would dislodge it, unless it was dying underneath or something of course.

Getting dinner now then FINALLY attaching moss and other plants! BTW I found ramshorn, MTS AND pond snails in the tank last night....just amazing! I threw all I found that were big enough to pickup (and tried so hard not to crush their frail little shells) and tossed them into the Tang tank with the assassin snails.

I actually put ramshorns and pond snails in my tank. Been watching for that snail explosion, and I swear something is eating them and their eggs. Most of my ramshorns are red, which I actually do like. Guess the low population means I'm not overfeeding, and the cleaner crew is doing an exceptional job. My shrimp and BNs are a lot more active than I expected!

I'd actually offer wisteria if it weren't for the fact I have snails.

I found a HUGE marimo ball one day at work, and it looked more like a rock in shape and size. It was pretty sorry looking in that betta cup of dirty water, but once it had been in my tank a few weeks, it really perked up. The shrimp love it too.

Almost 4 hours of tying later...

What a pain in the A$$!!!! Several suggestions for others considering many small pieces of wood covered in moss...
1. Don't do it! lol
2. If you do it have a team of people to help you. Doing this alone was MADDENING.
3. Use newer thread cause old thread tends to break at the worst possible times
4. Have enough moss...I ran out. Although I still have fissidens and subwrassertang but I didn't intend to attach those to the wood.
5. Expect last minute changes. Once it was tied together it sits differently in the tank now.
6. Have 7 back-up filters. As I was putting the wood back in my temporary filter made a noise and also stopped working! Ugh.

I'm typing this up to take break before I tackle the filter issue even though I just wanna go to bed. Still have some anubias nana and petite to place too....tomorrow maybe.

I like snails actually but my assassins don't have any snails in that tank and the other fish are way too good at getting all the leftover food. Do you have good hardness? Without calcium snails won't thrive, usually they will grow to a certain point then die. Or you could just have a good balance and keep a clean tank! ;)

Just tell people you have snails when you give/sell your wisteria, most won't care.

That looks soooooo COOL!!! It's going to be gorgeous once it adjusts and starts growing!

I'm still trying to figure out what GH and KH are, what they mean, and how you can determine them. My tap pH is 8.0, but my tank reads at 6.6. It went up slightly the last water change, but dropped back to 6.6 within 24 hours. But my water is very hard.

I do find some small snails, but nothing like I've heard can ("will") happen. I kinda suspect the BNs, my male is definitely an opportunistic omnivore, and I had a betta some years back that would eat baby ramshorns.

That looks great!! (look, I can type again!!) You know if the wisteria is happy, you're either going to trim it a LOT (often) or move it from it's front & center spot. I like your list of lessons on moss, lol. & your crypts don't look nearly as bad as I thought they might, I'm sure they'll recover
& be fab.

I like ramshorns & MTS but am not a fan of pond snails...except as loach treats, but they often prefer ramshorns too. I think I lost an angel or 2 that liked to try & eat small mts...but they were stunted & not likely to live a normal lifespan (sigh). I've also seen several different species that liked to eat pond & ramshorn eggs masses, good fishies!

As for offering plants w/snails, meh, I belong to a plant club & expect there to be snails & maybe algae. I rinse them & give them a quick look but not anything to worry about. The fanatics can dip or whatever if they're worried about those issues.

Well, thank you for your enthusiasm and praise!

GH is general hardness which is basically a measure of calcium and magnesium. When people talk about hardness, this is what they are talking about. You determine it by testing with a GH test, same with KH.

KH is carbonate hardness more often referred to as alkalinity. This is you buffering ability, something about water's ability to absorb acids. Basiclly you need some alkalinity to keep your pH stable, without enough KH your pH can be affected VERY easily giving you wild swings.

How do you know your water is hard if you don't know how to determine hardness?? Are you referring to your high pH when you say it is hard? A high pH means your water is alkaline or basic, not to be confused with alkalinity.

A big shift in pH like that indicates you have low KH for one thing but for another something is affecting the ph IN the tank. Do you have a lot of driftwood? Usually the culprit. Or a high CEC substrate? Do you use CO2? Do you gravel vac well?

Thanks! It feels really great to see the moss ON the wood! So glad that typing trouble is over!

I agree, I prefer rams and MTS over pond snails, I like MTS best cause they also serve the purpose of substrate aeration/disturbing. I usually dip with some potassium permanganate for parasites more than anything else, snails and algae are ok but leeches and icky stuff like that is not cool! lol
