PH raised out of no where!

Ok I apologize I know what you mean now. You would like both ranges for this tank I am discussing. Will do right now. I am actually right here :)

No need to apologize. :) I am actually curious as to how much overlap there is in the tests. Which tests (brand) do you have?

Ok so from left to right.
The first tube is 7.8 and that is what the water was when it went into the new breeder tank.
The next tube is a really dark blue (no green in it) doesn't match reg test at all.
Last tube is the high end test and I call it an 8

You made a lot of big changes to that tank. Water parameters will likely change. I wish you luck with your substrate layering. I always wind up with a mix. LOL!

I used Caribsea's FloraMax for a few years in a little planted 10g. It's dusty, but the plants did well in that setup.

Hey thanks! Yah I will let you know what I find :)

Hi FreshyFresh - I just re read your last message and you said I made a lot of changes to the tank. Can you clarify what you mean? I didn't make changes to the tank. It was a brand new tank set up but I used establish bio cubes, and filter foam and then of course the water from the established 65g. I think do you mean - the set up in the tank is different from where the water came from so that water went through a lot of changes? Thanks!! :)

Hello Bunsen! Did you see my water test pictures?

Yep. I agree with your analysis. The water definitely seems to go from 7.8 to 8.0, and the the low pH test is indicating that it is out of range.

Does the pH rise stop at 8.0, or does it continue to rise over time? If it remains stable, I probably wouldn't stress too much over it.

Hey Guys - Wanted to share my findings with you.
Tested 7.8 pH water in a bucket with Floramax - Did not raise pH
Tested 7.8 pH water in a bucket with Floramax and Flourish - Did not raise pH
The only other variable is the gravel. I thought it was the same gravel that is in my other tanks. I looked closer and it is not the same. I can't remember the name on the bag.
I don't have any extra to test in a bucket but I am thinking this is the culprit.
Never fails I get the tank to 7.8 with water change and one day later it is back up to 8
I am just going to start over and put the same substrate combo I have in this breeder tank that I have in my other tanks.

Have you done an acid test with this substrate? I bet if you dropped a piece into some vinegar that you'd see some fizzing.

I haven't left the water alone (doing tiny water changes because it is cycling and am having a little ammonia) but I would say after 4 days the pH stopped at 8 so that is good. Normally I wouldn't be so concerned but I am breeding apistos. I have had some great convos with members here about pH and breeding Cichlids but I am still concerned. I have read so many articles saying the eggs won't develop properly at a higher pH. I am actually going to post this in the forum in a bit. I need more input but that isn't the main focus on this thread. :)
