Changing Stock- 10g Community Ideas?

Hi Friends (:

First, some details about my tank!

Inside my 10g:
  • Sand substrate
  • Lots of fake plants
  • 1 real plant (not entirely sure what it is)
  • Fake rocks with hide holes
  • Fake hollow log for hiding
  • Moss ball
  • 6 barbs (rosy, green and tiger). DONT WORRY. THEY ARE GOING BACK TO THE STORE. I got them on bad LFS advice and now know better. Lol.
Filters, Heater, Etc.
  • Two filters! Aquaclear 20 and a Topfin Power Whisper Filter 10
  • Heater currently set at 80 degrees F
  • Dinky glass thermometer
Okay, on to the questions and info!

So, I'm looking to stock my 10g as a community tank. I'd really love a school or two of something, a centerpiece fish, and some bottom dwellers to feed on any extra food or algae. Some species I've been looking into are:
  • Peacock Gudgeons/Gobies
  • Chili Rasboras
  • Ember Tetras
  • Some sort of Killifish
  • Asian Stone Catfish
  • Pygmy Corys
  • Otto Cats
  • Shell Dwelling Cichlids
  • Kuhli Loaches
  • Clown Killifish
  • Betta
Are there any other fish you might recommend for a 10 gallon? Something that schools, is friendly, maybe top-mid swimmer? No jumping hopefully lol. My hood doesn't fit right because of the filters.

What are your favorite nano fish? (:
 
I would rule out Killies if your lid isn't tight fitting.


My personal preference would be for lots of live plants and some nano shrimp.

the light you are using would be the biggest question right now.. and how likely it is to grow live plants.

Yeahhhhhh i was probably gonna rule out the killies anyways for that reason alone.

The light i have rn sucks butt. i don't even know wtf it is. LED. Nothing special. I will probably end up going and buying a new light, but then that means no hood at all.... unless theres like a submersed light i could get that would work?
 
you can get a glass top that will cover the tank, and then an LED strip over the top of that.. We have a couple of those.. it does work well..
 
if you will replace th light, think about what plants you want to grow... you may be able to grow lower light plants now.. like crypts, anubias, buchephelandra etc.

I've been looking into anubias because i hear they're ridiculously easy

That are.. as are bucephalandra and lots of crypts too.

The trick is picking what you want, and will grow, not necessarily what is cheap from the store.

I you work out which direction you are going to go with, I may be able to pull a few plants for you.
 
Is the stock lid one from of those kits where the lights are clipped into the lid? Pretty sure those would be ok for anubias, because it really is that easy - just don't bury the rhizome in the substrate! If the lid is one of those that has the fluorescent tube light, you can just remove that and replace it with a LED - which is what I did on my 29g.

I have a planted 29g with water wisteria, that went absolutely crazy after I changed to an LED light. It's a weed, or at least now grows like one, and does take over the entire tank.
