Chatted with the seller on my issue. Given I can easily make the filter work as-is, they gave me a partial refund. In the end, this filter cost me about $100. Normal retail on them is about $140. Hopefully I'll have the time to get it up and running in the next few days.

I’d easily argue Flow and the benefit of it, based on where it was coming from. But hey, let’s not get started on UGFs and air bubble transfer. ?

She's a go! Works like a champ.

The only thing I added was another sponge disk atop the factory one between the ceramic rings and the crunchy coca puff media. I filled it with water prior to using it so it primed and took off with just a few tilts.

Cool. After all the trouble you've had, it's about time!

Cool, Joel! What are the cocoa puffs media? That's a new 1 for me...
These classics come with two different kinds of bio media. A small bag of ceramic tubes and a big bag of these porous little ceramic balls. If you've ever seen coca puffs cereal, it looks very similar. Like bunny poop.

Per design, the ceramic rings/tubes is what the water is supposed to hit first, then a sponge disk, then the bunny poop (which is the majority of the media), then a floss disk and finally back to the tank.

It's a neat little filter. Has some oddities though that I think are only associated with the classic 250 and 350. The worst one for me is the silly output / discharge hook. It's designed to hook over the side of your tank, not the back. I had to cobble together a 90deg elbow from another filter to get the discharge to shoot to the side. If you want the spray bar on it, you have to have a section of hose between the hook and the spray bar to make the necessary bends. The hooks for both the suction and discharge are barely big enough for the rim on the Aqueon 55g it's on as well.
