Probably culls from a local breeder. Or a pricing error. The kids they have manning these are often less than expert.

It really offends me when people say things like this. I work in the aquatics department at Petsmart and while I do agree that there are a couple of people working with me who don't know anything about fish (both are new employees) majority of those working in my department know a good deal about fish keeping.

And as for the fish being culls, impossible. Petsmart has there own fish breeders where they get only the best fish, not culls. The reason the fish are only a dollar is because, just like every other big name store, we are having a sale. Neon tetras, assorted platies, red minor tetras, and african dwarf frogs are also on sale for a dollar but only if you have a pet perks card. Please get your facts straight before you go about bashing something you know nothing about.

I'm curious as to where this petsmart is located, my petsmart doesn't even have rams right now.

He didn't say "always less than expert" he said "often less than expert." That's a big difference and is consistent with the experiences of many people shopping at petco/petsmart/walmart. Granted, there are lots of very experienced and capable folks there, but also lots of less than great people. The fact is that many big box fish departments are not well staffed, but this doesn't mean that the job isn't very tough and the departments are hard to handle for even the best fishkeepers. I mean, I'd hate to manage an ich outbreak in a big box store where all the tanks are interconnected. I can't even imagine how that might work, short of dosing the entire system or nuking it with UV (or both).

Just yesterday a guy tried to tell me that a female bristlenose was a gold nugget and cost $30. I kinda walked away slowly from that department.

I understand how you might be offended, but please don't take these observations as personal attacks. The internet is littered with gripes about LFS personel and I imagine that at least a few are well founded.
