New Prime Smells Terrible

Maybe you spilled some on the outside of the tank.

Sorry but using Prime is not worth a stinky room to me... I use it, it reeks in the bottle but not in the tank. If Prime made my house stink I'd be done w/ it.

For the record, I have a fairly new bottle of Prime and when it's in the tank, it doesn't stink. lol

One thing to consider is how much Prime you use vs how much chlorine/chloramines are in the water. Many folks use a double dose when filling up their tank. There is not usually enough chlorine/chloramines to use up this much prime immediately.

I concur....I currently use AquaSafe which smells a little like a wet baseball glove, but only when in the bottle. I was thinking of changing to Prime once the AquaSafe was gone as everyone always is raving how cost effective and wonderful Prime is.....unfortunately, its dog crap scent room odorizing capabilities are the clincher...I'll stick with the wet leather smelling AquaSafe. :)

I have been using Prime for quite awhile, but a few days ago I ran out and bought a new bottle.

After doing some water changes I got a terrible smell in my house. I traced it back to the fish tank. After further research I found the Prime is incredibly foul smelling both in the tank and in the bottle.

As I said I have used it for quite awhile and I have never had this problem.

Did anyone catch that thte poster has used Prime in the past and considered the smell abnormal?

Are you certain it's the Prime your smelling? If so, could some have been spilled, or perhaps could a container have a hole and be leaking it?

I swear, I do! lol I use a double dose since I usually do a 50% water change and add Prime for the full volume of the tank and then some! My room doesn't stink.

I have two tanks in my dining room so, that would be a real problem!

Madcrawdad, don't let that put you off Prime, I really don't think the OP's experience is typical.

i know for a fact that the large bottles of prime are NOT engineered for side storage, and when it leaks, it reeks! Even more so when it starts drying.

If you are worried about the smell, just switch to a different water conditioner. I doubt there is a significant functional difference between Prime and, for example, Stress Coat, but the latter happens to have a very pleasant odor of Aloe Vera. I know Prime also detoxifies Ammonia, but bacteria should be doing that anyway.

lol, ive been using dechlor, those turquoise bottles that last years, for almost a decade! i thought about switching to prime, but forget it after reading this!

I bet that is what happened!!

The outside of the bottle stinks almost as bad as the inside. So I bet some leaked out and is drying causing this crazy bad smell.

I am still a little worried though because I still have my old bottle and I can whiff it and it doesnt smell near this bad. Even in the bottle.
