My nitrates read almost at 0

It won’t affect the need at all. As YuccaPatrol said, nitrates aren’t the only pollutants that are built up in a tank, they are just the easiest to test for. So you still need to do water changes to get the rest out. Many people with planted tanks do 50% to “reset” the nutrient level each week.

    Brocoli?? Cauliflower??

I have tried broccoli and cauliflower stems. Same holds true for me as Roan Art said, "It's not a real fav, they'd prefer zucchini, but they will eat it." They're nibbled on, but not devoured like the zucchini. I do find I have to boil them to get them very soft first, in order to get them to...

    Sterilization

Funny you should mention that. I was searching something on google a few days ago (can't remember what now) and came across an old post on another forum about doing that - the reason it caught my attention was that the poster was "wetmanNY" (skepticalaquarist.com) who used to post here all the...

    Favorite Fish For 10g

I'm setting up my 10 gallon with heterandria formosa (and eventually more ottos when I move out my panda cories/or maybe dwarf cories if I can ever find some). They are very small livebearers so you can fit a lot in a 10 gallon. But... hmmm... entertaining? I like mine a great deal although...

Anyone knoe where to get natural slate rock for decor?

This was suggested to me by somebody locally who breeds fish. He buys slate tiles from a hardware-type store, then drops them on the ground to break them into pieces. I'm going to try it, but my concern was sharp edges (?)

Wasn't Norbert a scardy-cat green dragon? Trying to recall if it was a book I used to read my son or TV show or what (long time ago). Time to google.....

    Do I have Flukes???

You don't have to poisin your tank with something harsh. I would try PraziPro by Hikari. The Hikari USA site is down, but this is a pic of what it looks like: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/images/products/large/p_18819_26672D.jpg It's good for flukes and various other things. It won't...

    a mother's eyes

Then I would never see them, I hardly ever go into the livingroom. I just got a new fish room built in the basement, right next to my office, where I can see them as I spend most of my days down here. (Fish room only has 3 walls, the 4th has a sofa but is otherwise open.)

    a mother's eyes

I did. Thanks. It's nice your mother asked to see him, anyway, no matter what she thought about his looks. I got some new fish on Friday - my husband was out of town at a curling bonspiel. He came back Monday afternoon. I waited and waited. Finally, late Monday evening, I asked, "Do you...

    new 5 gallon

Paradise fish would be ok. I have one in a 5 gallon. He was supposed to go into a bigger tank but he's not nice to any new friends, so looks like he's staying there. I think danios are too hyper for a 5 gallon. Another thought (if you can find them) is Heterandria formosa. They are...

    I'm a newbie moron...sigh

Bigger DAILY water changes than 30% are ok and almost a requirement in this situation. You want to bring your nitrites down to at least 0.25. It’s not even unheard of to do a couple 50% water changes in one day. So, that’ll help bring your nitrites down quicker (for #1) and the guy at the...
