Ammonia levels over 6ppm can stall a fishless cycle out.... But what I am trying to figure out is why the ammonia level would be rising for you to do a water change at all??? .... Once you add the first dose to get it to 4-5ppm you dont add anymore until it starts dropping which means nitrites...

If you are going to do it that way just wait to put the media in when you get the puffers...this way the bacteria will adjust itself to the new fish instead of possibly lowering the colony with adding one fish and waiting. When you get home with the puffers and put them in the tank transfer...

Never use one...just have my monitor cutoff after 20 minutes of non-use

It would probably be easier to just swap media and add some gravel from the old tank at the same time as you add the fish.... Then just be sure to test daily and do water changes to handle the spikes you might have. Oh by nylons we mean pantyhose ....just be sure they are new and havent been...

From the way I understand this you dont live at home if you are calling your parents for advice ..... If you are old enough to be on your own why not just go get the thing if you want it this bad and like someone mentioned if the weather starts getting bad turn around.

That would probably work...just leave it in for awhile to let a good bacteria colony build in the new gravel...you could slowly start taking the gravel out of the strainer alittle at a time every few days or week to keep from too big of a mini-cycle starting

Or you might could try doing it in sections about once a week...do alittle and leave space between the two.... this will just be taking small amounts of bacteria out at a time that will resolve itself in a few days

:popcorn: I didnt see it as Blue calling you a liar either... I too was alittle confused in the thread when you were saying you were going to take them back...then asked about suggestions on how to keep them. I think this is what Blue was really trying to get at was are you keeping them or...

As long as the wall isnt a load bearing wall you can do whatever with it... I wouldnt go cutting a 4 foot hole through studs on a load bearing wall or you could have bigger issues down the road.

Fusion comes in different finishes .... I would use satin finish if it were me...not too shiny yet wont be flat looking either.

I would try Krylon Fusion spray paint (made to bond to plastic)... I havent painted tank trim with it but I am sure it would do well as I have used it on other kinds of plastic with great results

My tank stays at 78.5 - 79 degrees with my GBR's ,tetras and cories and they all seem to be doing fine.

Oto's stay pretty small ...might check into them
