Fishless cycle..am I on the right track?

It only took about 1 teaspoon (or less) for my 55 gallon tank to get it in the 4-5ppm range. But not all ammonia you buy is the same concentration so results will vary from brand to brand.

Fishless cycle..am I on the right track?

8ppm is the highest an API test kit will read...so the ammonia reading was more than likely higher than 8ppm if a 50% water change didnt drop it down any. I would do another 50% and retest and do more water changes as needed to get it to somewhere in the 3-5ppm range.

It will eventually cycle...just keep a good eye on the ammonia level and keep it under .25ppm with water changes. What is your nitrate reading on the tank?

ten gallon new set up.... questions answered please

:iagree: I wouldnt move anything from the other tank over until you add either the shrimp or snails ...as the good bacteria will start dying off without a source of ammonia.

    Lights?

I would steer clear of the Odyssea brand lights... I have heard alot of stories about them having heat issues that lead to fire issues. But then again there are some that swear by them and have not had any problems...just do some research on them before you buy.

    Black Tahitian Moon vs. Eco-Complete

I have Black Tahitan Moon sand in my 55g and 10g tanks... Just pour alittle in a bucket and set it in the sink and rinse it several times...It takes several rinses to get it pretty clean and you may not ever get the water in the bucket looking totally clear but mine never clouded up my tank...

    Cycling and heavy bio load.

If you do a fishless cycle and dose ammonia to 4-5ppm then it will produce enough good bacteria to handle a heavy bio load .....but if you are going to cycle with fish it would be easier to start with a few and then just add one or two a week to increase to bio load slowly.Doing it this way wont...

    Fishless Cycling Question

Just dont let your ammonia get over 6ppm or it can stall your cycle out...if you see it getting that high do a water change to get it around the 4ppm mark.

not sure, but might switch my stock list. . .

Do you have a local fish store that might take them in for store credit? If so maybe they have or can get you a red devil and you could use the credit for it.
