    Sponge filter vs HOB

Thank you for the replies. We also wrapped sponge media on intake of HOB. So, the HOB didn't eat any fries but still fries don't like the fast flow generated by HOB. (Aqueon 30 on 20G tank) So, the following is our plan for filtration change. ----------------------------------------------- 1...

    Sponge filter vs HOB

We haven't run any sponge filter because it looks ugly. Due to the fast flow problem, we have a plan to change the filtration from HOB to sponge filter for shrimp & fry tank. Here is what I found. Sponge filter: :thm: Quite flow Better aeration No fry / shrimp eating Cheap HOB...

    Oh Ick- it's ick!

I also believe temp should be over 82. (I raised it till 86 in my case before.) You may raise 2 per day not to stress your fish too much. You may lower water level down and put more air stone / maximize air pump to increase aeration.

    Otos won't eat waffers

Our otos love Romaine lettuce. We have to shake to get them off from lettuce after 12-24 hours.

    bacterial infection?

If it is Columnaris, you have to use Maracyn-2 or Tetracyline. (Maracyn-2 may be better.) Maracyn is for gram-positive bacteria infection and not going to work against Columnaris.

    Cory cats and guppy fry?

Our guppy fries have been kept with either False Julli or Albino Aeneus. Most of the time, we had 100+ fries. Cory might eat some by accident but never chase them. Most of our fries are safe and # of fries is consistent. (I cannot count exact # though) :)

    running two AC50s

I always prefer to have 2 HOBs instead of one. (One could be used for emergency purpose for other tank.) In general, extra filtration never hurt. You still have to watch your fishes carefully for a couple of weeks. Most fishes will be accustomed to new rather faster /strong flow. If you find...

Feeling like a complete failure...water test results

looks like ammonia spike. 50%+ water change (without gravel cleaning) and fastening for today may help. If you follow the standard flake feeding method (feeding flake for 3-5 min), it would be too much. Molly, platy and tetra are active eaters. So, 30sec-1min flake feeding will be more than...

    Newbie cycling quesion

Newbie's advice may be easier. :) If you want to go for with-fish-cycling, you can put 1 or 2 fishes at the same time as old filter putting. IMO, Zebra Danio is better than molly or platy. (Bacteria supplement may be helpful. I am not sure..) You better be prepare for smaller tank for...

cool cardinal and neon tetra shot

Nice tetras.. Our 5 neons & 2 cardinals are scholling together as well. When light turns on, it takes less than a minute to get their nice color for cardinal. However, it takes 2-3x more time for neons. I am not sure it is normal though.
