How Much Flow in Planted Tank - Add a Powerhead?

Right now in my 15 gallon planted I have an Aquaclear 50 (rated at 66gph) and I am using a Hagen Elite Mini underwater filter (rated at 58gph) for my CO2 diffuser. I'm curious if I should add another powerhead or something to increase water flow in the tank or if I'm at a good amount. Can you...

    Diatoms and Low-Light Tanks

hmm....no it's only been up maybe 6 months. so maybe it still is in that "new" phase, although from what I've read it shouldn't be an issue after 3-4 months.

    Diatoms and Low-Light Tanks

I can't think of any specific event. My DIY CO2 did die out on me, which I'm sure helped in causing the issue. I've been playing around with things in the tank pretty much constantly. I've rescaped it a few times in the 6 month period and I've been pulling plants in and out. So it may just be...

    Diatoms and Low-Light Tanks

that's the thing though...the tank has been up for a while. it's fully cycled. I don't know what my silicate levels are (or how to even test that). I can keep removing it, but I don't see that as a real solution.

    Diatoms and Low-Light Tanks

So I've been struggling with what I'm pretty sure are diatoms for about a month now. The stuff has pretty much taken over my plants (was all over my dwarf hairgrass, which I pulled out, and is still all over the couple of plants that are still in there). The tank has been up for about 6 months...

    250G Community recommendations

ADF = African Dwarf Frogs. You mentioned you might put them in there. Again, I think the tank might be too big for them. They also aren't very competitive in terms of feeding so if you're planning on having any other bottom dwellers you'd have to feed the ADF's by hand (I have a pair in my 15g...

How can I improve my 10g planted?

definitely better. what are those plants in the foreground though? you may want to think a bit more about their placement...right now it just kinda looks like they're weeds lol

i don't know if ADFs would be happy in there. how tall is a 250? ADF's need to get to the surface to breath, which might be an issue if the tank is too tall (this is all second hand info so don't take my word on this lol)

DIY CO2 Rig Breaks When Adding Second Bottle

I think one of the plastic connectors that I was using between the 2nd and 1st bottle was leaking. i changed it out and it seems to be working now. yay for faulty equipment :headshake2: at least it's working now

Cottong Thread or Fishing Line to Attach Mosses to Driftwood?

I've heard of both methods being used and I'm curious if one is preferred over the other. My original intention was to use cotton thread but I've read several times that it might dissolve before the moss firmly attach themselves. The last thing I want to have to do is pull everything out a...

DIY CO2 Rig Breaks When Adding Second Bottle

So apparently the issue with my CO2 system has to do with how I've added the second bottle to the system. When I attach 1 bottle the system works fine but as soon as I attach the second bottle no more bubbles. The system with the two bottles looks like this (minus the reactor and the check...

Roots growing out the tops of my plants

Those look like aerial roots, which I've found happen when my stem plants have not fully developed their in-ground root system. What are you using for a substrate? How long have the plants been planted? Edit: I see you're using sand as your substrate. Is it flourite? Or regular sand? If it's...

How Much Light for Moss-Only Tank?

So I'm turning my 15gallon into a moss only tank (well, there will be some anubias in there too but they are the most undemanding plants I've ever seen so I'm more concerned about the needs of the moss). My main concern is avoiding algae. Even if it means slower growth I'm willing to decrease...

Setting up Low-Light Moss Tank - Need Suggestions

they're spiral cfls. 2 x 20W as for the ground cover issue, i think i'm going to try using the mesh concept that is used for moss walls, but just lay it on the substrate. i've seen this done by other people and it seems to work out ok.

Setting up Low-Light Moss Tank - Need Suggestions

well i guess my question is...should I reduce my lighting down from 40W to 30W (i.e. will this help with my algae issues) or will this be detrimental to the plants without providing very much gain (again, i.e. decreasing algae growth, in particular BBA and brown algae)

Setting up Low-Light Moss Tank - Need Suggestions

so should i stick with 40w over my 15? b/c i've been getting some bba at that wattage (part of the reason i wanted to go with a lower light set-up) if i were to decrease it down to maybe 30w would the moss not grow?

Setting up Low-Light Moss Tank - Need Suggestions

hmmm, so right now i have a whole bunch of java moss, some christmas moss, some weeping moss, and maybe (pending a response from the person) some taiwan moss coming to me. anyone have anything to add to the list? also, should I bother keeping up with the CO2. How much benefit will the moss...

that picture was just a smiley...don't know why it didn't come through. which type of moss is best as a ground cover?

I'd hate to be a pain

i haven't had any luck with ground cover at that light strength, mostly b/c the ground cover that grows at that light strength tends to grow slowly enough where algae begins to accumulate on it. but maybe you'll have more luck. dwarf clover might be a good option. dwarf hairgrass too (although...
