I don't know about a 20g but a 29g kit that has everything except gravel and decor is $100 here.

Up until about 8-10" he is going to grow fast, about the tank size something atleast a 20g long is the bare minimum but I would go bigger.

I don't think they need driftwood but I'm not an expert, but I do know they need a constant food supply or they can take a rapid turn for the worse.

How long are the lites on for because in my tank I get the same thing but only on my piece of driftwood that sits about 2" under the lights.

I don't think you need a heater because they are cold water fish, but I think you should look a getting a bigger tank soon rather than later because he is going to grow really fast and out grow that tank in a couple of weeks.
