Actually those plant weights are made of misc. metals too, if they were still lead, they would have warnings all over them, especially if they are for sale in California.

It depends on the weeds you're growing, in my experience the stem plants are what need a trim every week and the foreground plants need to thinned every couple weeks, so that they arent growing over each other.

I personally like 3x54watt over 75gallons, the plants might not pearl as early in the day, when I had 4+ bulbs going. But the lack of algae and weekly trimmings sure are nice. Edit: Some 4x 54watt fixtures will actually allow you to run only 3 bulbs, but its best to ask the manufacturer first...

Even try hydroponic stores, my local shop sells T5HO fixtures with 6700k bulbs cheaper than any e-retailer but they dont come with plexiglass shields, but thats curable with a drive to Lowes'.

I dose first thing when I wake persoanlly, but I've never noticed any difference dosing before or after the photoperiod starts.

Direct some flow into the rocks or used another pump to clear out the rock work, it might be holding onto some detritus or other bio-material and that can be your source of nitrate.

I dont know if this has been mentioned before yet, but glass is nice if the tank is setup around children and pets. I've seen nice acrylic tanks ruined by little hands with toys or finding the mag-float unattended.
