I'm a fan of the Pro2s, but with that Marine depot deal, I would definitely try a Pro3 out. Plus you can dial down flow-rates too if its too much for a 30 gal.

They are equal in growing plants, ime. Just pick out what you like best in terms of looks and price.

There are plenty of plants that do not require next to nothing in terms of need. Some java ferns or a couple of anubias would do a 5 gallon wonders and as long as the tank gets a little light, they'll survive for a long time in not indefinitely.

The only thing I hate about PMDD is the lack of P (phosphorous) fertilization. The system was developed more than a decade ago, and phosphate at the time was blamed for algae growth. You can either purchase KNO3 from an aquarium fertilizer site or it can even be bought at hardware stores as stump remover, but make sure the stump remover is pure Potassium Nitrate.

I have a 3x54watt fixture and its been in use for 6 months+ and no issues to date. They are really popular on APC and TPT forums too, and I dont think I have ever read or heard of problem with catalina.
