I got all of my rocks for my cichlid tank from a river. I didn't actually get them out of the river, just a flood plain that will be underwater in 2 months when spring gets here. My LFS wants ~$2.00 a Lb. I got ~70 Lbs. of rock from my river. Cost? Rocks - Free, Small container of chlorine...

If your filter has 2 cartridges, just replace them 1 at a time. That way, you still keep half of the bacteria. If you need to replace both of them, cut up part of one, and put it in with the new ones. That way, you seed the new filters.
