That is terrible logic. just because they could live 12 years in a tiny tank doesn't mean that it is healthy, and ethical for that matter. I'm sure those fish were stunted too. The only way that would even remotely be acceptable is if the tank was way overfiltered and had water changes...

You could try melefix or pimafix as star_rider said, but just make sure water is in good shape and do as many partial water changes as you can over the next couple of weeks.

The group of frontosas looks pretty good without other types of fish, but while the frontosas are small, you can probably put some adult altolamprologus (calvus or compressiceps) with them.

The African cichlid salts are different from marine salt, so I don't they would affect whether a skimmer's usefulness in FW.

I would look into a Tanganyikan cichlid tank. you can go the frontosa colony route, or maybe a community of others you might like. A lot more unique behavior and diversity than Malawi cichlids.

i wouldn't add columbian sharks because they are high brackish/marine fishes, and the cichlids won't accept that.

I've always preferred the long, because what matters is the footprint, and the more space the more available territories for the fishes.

despite your luck in that regard, it is still in their nature to be predators on smaller prey, which obviously includes smaller tankmates.
