how to introduce food to painted fire reds

How many shrimp do you have? How old is the tank? My dwarf shrimp tanks get fed twice a week. My Macro tanks get fed more often (depending on population and how quickly they eat the food). With shrimp only tanks, it is easy to over feed. I would recommend that you feed a small pinch of...

Little white dots swimming in tank

    I wouldn't worry, they're a sign of a healthy environment.

are any fish compatible with dwarf crayfish?

As mentioned, you're more likely to see fighting between adult male crayfish, when a female crayfish is ready to mate, than losses due to predation. One other thing I'd add, more cover for the juvenile crayfish. They could be excessively stressed by fish, even when the fish are not actively...

    Project Orange

Paint one side of the tank black and shine a light on it. I did that while breeding M. scabriculum.

    Plants for shrimp shelter

Chunks of natural sea sponge work great too. They also provide a substrate for microbes that the shrimp eat, like a vegetable garden for shrimp. Just make sure that you get untreated sea sponges, and boil them to be safe.

    Shrimp eating leaves

Shrimp do not intend to eat the leaves. They are actually eating the microbes that live by eating decaying plants. It so happens that they do eat parts of the leaves as they go after their intended supper. If you were to sterilize the leaves, before putting them in the tank, the shrimp...

Do you use an undergravel in your shrimp tank?

Mellow, I've also had shrimp tanks with under gravel filters for over 10 years. I do however, remove the shrimp and plants about every three years or so, to do a good cleaning. To clean I take out the filter platform and half of the substrate and put them in a bucket. Next I do a through...

Largest red claw is a female!

Mel, I don't want to co-opt sed03f's thread, so I'll only answer this. If you have any more questions, PM me, or start a new thread. I have to assume that you're referring to separating shrimp from your crayfish. If so, it's a good plan. I'm not sure which type of shrimp you're referring to...

red claw shrimp grow out tank

I used grow out tanks when I was breeding shrimp on a large scale (for a home setup). I had one community tank, where I would only cull the population when I noticed large numbers of adult males, I also used it as the source of adult breeding stock if I lost one from one of my breeding tanks...

Largest red claw is a female!

sed03f, I also really enjoy my Red Claw, and other Macro shrimp. Congrats with your successful population. mela, I would be cautious housing shrimp with a non dwarf crawdad. The larger species tend to be more aggressive (this is true with shrimp and crawdads). If you really want to do...

    Shrimp and leaves

Here's what I've learned over the years. It's best to use leaves that have died and fallen to the ground, in the fall. That way most of the chemicals have been pulled back into the tree. They also should be pre-soaked, to remove other chemicals, such as the tannin chemicals and fertilizers...

    Crayfish help?

Crayfish can't regrow eyes and major body parts. Legs, claws, swimmeretts, and antennae all grow back. It can take a few molts for a claw or limb to fully regrow. Bad idea. Even if the fish don't harass the crayfish to death (which is very likely), they'll kill him when he molts.

    Crayfish help?

Honestly, we can't give you a definitive answer, without a good picture of your cray. If you have a young non dwarf crayfish, it most likely will be well behaved, until it matures. If you can't post a good picture, I would then recommend that you be cautious. Never put anything that you...

    Mixed shrimp species?

Yes, Caridina, Neocaridina, and Macrobrachium = genus. Most scientific names use the genus and species name, when they are known. If the species is not known, then an abbreviation of 'species' is used (such as Neocaridina sp.).

    Crayfish help?

Do you know the species of crayfish? The crayfish that I most frequently see sold as 'blue crayfish' are P. alleni and C. quadricarinatus. Both are not dwarf species, and can be aggressive hunters. They can grow to six to nine inches. I know that doesn't help you, but without knowing the...

    Mother shrimp

I've also found this to be the easiest solution. The bright white filter media does change to a muted brown after a month or two.

    Live Food for Crayfish?!?!

In my experience, the non dwarf species of crayfish are more active hunters than dwarf species. Even so, I've had procambarus alleni that left all fish alone, and other P. alleni that went after everything. Tarzan, when smaller, would climb up the fake plants, and attempt to ambush fish on the...

    Shrimp Crossbreeding

Whenever you house color variations of the same species in the same tank, you are creating less desirable color mutations. If not corrected, the mixing will dilute colors and possibly revert to the muted wild markings. I know that there are multiple color variations of CRS (all red CRS, all...

    Rock shrimp and cherries together?

If 'Rock shrimp' are an example of filter feeding shrimp, they are extremely passive. They lack claws, and their mouths are designed for preening food out of their fan like filters. Even newly hatched shrimp would be large and quick enough to get away from a filter feeder. Filter feeders...
