    Micron filtering alternatives.

I was also looking at the diatom Vortex, but I think i'm going to try the HOT Magnum first, from a cost perspective plus it looks to be easier to use and maintain. My main concern are my tanks that are for showing stuff off in my house and occasionally strapping one of these bad boys on to...

Diatom Filter? System 1 vs Vortex?

Ok... even more beginner question here. How does a diatom filter work with the powder and all as opposed to water polishing with say a HOT Magnum and its' 1 micron filter?

    Butterfly Rams

This is just an idea.... and I haven't bred rams before so I don't know how the parents would react... but what about using mesh to make a "containment net" around the parents and eggs since they're in the front corner. two rectangular squares with mesh, the height of the tank and say...

I hear about alot of people using HOT Magnums with the micron filter for water polishing and such. Are there any other good micron filters out there?

    Emperor 400 extra filters

I also use mine for doubling up filter floss. I have a friend who has some type of "bio mesh" insert to up the biological capacity. It looks like a filter made of pourous lavastone, but I have never seen anything like it before, It supposedly had tons of surface area for bacteria.

    Kuhlie loach conditions

I have several rocks built up in sand substrate in my tank in which I keep them. They make great bottom foragers and stuff and seem to love the sandy substrate. I need to find a good complimentary middle to top water fish for that tank now too.

    Tempered or Regular...

I was planning on drilling the backs instead of the bottoms anyways. I was under the impression that if tempered glass was used it was used for all sides. Or is this JUST the bottoms that tempered glas is used on? I am somewhat at a loss as my knowledge of tank construction isn't quite...

    Where did it come from?

My first bet it with plants you bought. Second bet is that if this is a reasonably new tank it might have been in the substrate you added. I have seen substrate stored dry for months, put into a tank filled with water, no plants, no livestock, allowing it to start it's cycle and in a week...

    Fish water good for plants?

I use my change water for my plants in my back yard and it has done wonders. It also helps the always thirsty pear tree in my back yard.

    Tempered or Regular...

I have a number of oceanic 24 gallon tanks at my disposal now and I am debating trying to set up a centralized filtration system. I know I cannot drill tempered glass, but I do not know a good way to tell if glass is tempered or not.... How would one be able to tell if not asking the...

Why isn?t our male pearl gouarmie building a bubble nest?

Key's for me in breeding Blues (which I hear are similar in breeding patterns to pearls) are raising the tamp to a touch over 80 degrees, and making sure they have a still water surface to work with. The latter I usually accomplish with a plastic blocker between the back of the tank (where...

    Jobe's plant spikes

Thanks for the responses guys. I was just noticing some people saying they were using them, and wondering what the differences were. I am currently using some root tabs int he substrate along with my flourish and c02 injection and seeing nice results, but was wondering if that might be an...

    Moon light lighting(pic)

I already use x-10 systems for my lighting sontrol in my house. I have the power strip with lighting on each tank on an x-10 controller, total cost is about $20 per controller, some for the PC interface. With it I can set timers to turn lights on and off for me. Whereas I use the On or Off...

    Pleco

My favorite pleco waste product quote was : "it's stringing poop around like it was decorating for a party" followed by the response "that is not a party I would want to go to"

    Resealing Aquarium

I have a tank on my rack I think i'm about to have to do this to. (I think i've seen a trace of moisture under one of it's seams while cycling and prepping it.) Where would you guys say the best on line guide for this procedure is? Is there a definative work on the subject?

I would like everybodys views on UGF's

I have kept both on tanks and seen both do well. My longest running tank for yearas had a UGF and a hob emp400 on a 50 gallon acrylic. And on top of that it was planted. My amazon swords in it thrived in that environment. Someone in one of the first responses on this thread mentioned...

    Jobe's plant spikes

I have seen severeal references to using these in planted tanks. I am having toruble finding those at the stores I frequent around Dallas. I have although seen miracle grow spikes, and some "mainstay" spikes which seem to be the WalMart in house brand. Is there any comparison anywhere...
