I usually just cover the backs of my tanks. My usual covering is black velvet or cloth.

I also use mine for doubling up filter floss. I have a friend who has some type of "bio mesh" insert to up the biological capacity. It looks like a filter made of pourous lavastone, but I have never seen anything like it before, It supposedly had tons of surface area for bacteria.
