I'd like the best diatom filter and I'm looking at the System 1 from Aquarium Products as I can hang it off the front of my tank and run it for a few hours a week. Does anyone have any experience with this one? I've also heard the System 1 is much easier to clean vs the Vortex line?

i was wondering this also about getting a diatom filter but have no experience with them.

I have the Vortex XL - thanks to this website! It's the best diatom filter out, but it can be slightly cumbersome to set-up. Once you set it up a few times it's no problem at all. The Vortex D-1 is for smaller aquariums.
I highly recommend this product! I use it after each water change (once a week). The water is crystal clear.. :)

In the vortex diatom filters the powder coats the filter bag. Water is then forced through powder making for very fine filtration.

Can't you also do the same thing with a Magnum? Mine came with diatom powder years ago when I got it. Just wondering because a HOT Magnum is like $50 and the Vortex is almost $100. The magnum would also be more versatile. But, probably just as cumbersome as the vortex to set up.

Just my two cents.

p.s. why do want a diatom? My water is as crystal clear as I've seen and I have foam and biomedia in my filters. If make a big mess I hook up the Mag with the micron and it clears up in a couple hours.

Some like their Magnums, others have said they don't filter as good as the Vortex. The Vortex is designed strictly as a Diatom Filter. The Vortex XL is rather large, and I suppose this helps with its effectiveness. It takes 3 cups of diatom powder for each use.
For smaller aquariums, there's the Vortex D-1.

Will a diatom filter clear out the haze in the water that is the result of moving plants in a clay substrate?
