Disaster- let little sister take care of tank for weekend.....

Sam is ABSOLUTELY right! I sometimes skip a few days feeding my fish. (30g at home, 5g at the office) They can go a couple of weeks with NO PROBLEM. Your sister almost certainly overfed your fish. This caused the nitrite spike. Don't leave her any food from now on. Tell her if she...

    The tank that won't cycle

I would do a 50% water change. DON'T wash the filter media or decorations! I would also gravel vac. Don't give up. And BE PATIENT. It takes a couple of months sometimes to complete a cycle.

    Cloudy water getting even cloudier

Your tank is certainly still cycling. LEAVE IT ALONE.....UNLESS AMMONIA GETS TO .25, THEN DO A 50% WATER CHANGE. I know it's hard to not mess with it....but STOP!

    two male gouramis

In a nutshell ..... NO NO NO. That's the common experience with male gouramis. How long has the tank been running? Is it cycled?

    Dying fish, help please

How long has this tank been running? For starters, it is WAY overstocked. Unless your doing weekly water changes.....and I doubt you are....you'll need to get rid of some fish....but it sounds as if mother nature is doing it for you. Find your test kit...and report back. And I would stop...

    Water Quality Questions

What size is the tank? How long has it been up and running? How often do you do pwc/s? On the PH issue.....the driftwood will probably lower your PH naturally. Mine did. If not, I would not mess with it. A stable PH, whether low or high, is better for the fish than a fluctuating one. I...

    African Dwarf Frogs

I have a 5g hex on my desk at work. The residents are: 1 dwarf gourami, 2 neons, 1 bronze cory, 2 ghost shrimp, 1 little crab, 1 mystery snail, and 1 dwarf frog. Plants are: 1 java fern, 1 water sprite, and 1 broad-leaf plant that I can't remember the name of. I have lost count of how many...

    Aponogeton Bulbs????

Just drop them in the tank. They could take MONTHS to sprout, if they even sprout at all. We've only had one out of four to grow. Patience is a virtue!

    More than a couple questions.

Overstocking, lack of temp. control, lack of water changes, lack of gravel vac-ing, adding too many meds and treatments, no quarantine, .....................did I miss anything? Stop ALL of those things, and you might just save your fish.

Are snails causing my plant problem?

I hate to sound like a total newbie, but I can't remember. Hubby picks up the bulbs, etc. I'll check this evening and post tom. Thanks

Are snails causing my plant problem?

I have an established 29g that is moderately planted with water sprite. I have one small java fern and one plant that came from a Wal Mart bulb. The water sprite was doing GREAT....until we added two mystery snails a couple of months ago. Now the water sprite looks weak and sickly. The snails...

    always hungry

I think my dwarf gourami at work would eat 24/7 if I would feed him that much! He will come up to the side of the tank facing me (5g hex on my desk) and spit water through the little access hole on the top/back of the tank where I drop the food in. It looks like a little fountain. He's...

If fish "school" in the wild.......

OK, enough is enough. I have read 3 threads this morning on "why won't my fish school?" CONSIDER THIS: We've all heard the old question "If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it....does it make a sound?" Most of us have seen video on the Discovery channell of fish...

    Why won't my rasboras school?

EXACTLY....... they don't school because they are not frightened. Do you really want them to be frightened all the time? REMEMBER....stress can weaken their immune system, and make them more prone to disease and untimely death. We can't make all God's creatures perform for us all the time...

    Shoaling and Schooling?

ANYWAY......they do it when they are frightened......or to avoid being eaten. If they are comfortable in your home aquarium, don't expect them to do it much. REMEMBER.....We can't really expect fish to act as if they are in the wild....when they're in a glass box in our living room. lol

How many tetras do you need to school?

Schooling is a defense mechanism that fish use in the wild to avoid being eaten. The way to get them to school in a home aquarium is to make sure they are scared all the time. Do you want to do that to your fish? My four neons get along great with the seven pink danios and other residents of...

    confused

How long has your tank been set up? Do you have a Python or other kind of gravel siphon? That is the best way to do gravel vacs and water changes. It sucks up the muck and poop outa the gravel, and siphons out water at the same time. We do our 29g twice a month. Good luck!

newbie upgrading to 20g - a couple of questions

I would float a piece of filter media in the old tank for a few days, then squeaze and swish it around in the new tank.....worked for me! Or use filter media that has been in operation in the old tank.

    Tank maintenance

A siphon will suck out water and debris without removing your gravel. The gravel will suck up a little way into the tube, enough to dislodge the poop and uneaten food. It is VERY important to do this weekly or every other week. You can accomplish water changes and getting rid of poop at the same...

    stocking - ghost shrimp question

I have 2 ghosties in with my dwarf gourami and bronze cory at work. The gourami picks on EVERYBODY but the shrimp.....go figure.
