    white film on water surface

This is a protein film. Try feeding a little less and see if that takes care of it. For now, you can remove it by carefully placing paper towels on the surface. They will absorb it.

    High Nitrate Levels

Yes, as others have said, start doing larger and more frequent water changes. All of my tanks, even my fully stocked ones, never get above 10ppm. Also, don't feed so much and as often. I feed my fish no more than 3 times a week.

    snail shell deterioration

What is your pH? Snail shells dissolve in acidic water. Keep your pH well above 7 and your snail shells will stay in better shape.

thinking about 15 gal tank for the office...

Sounds like your job and interests would be perfect for a shrimp tank. A nicely planted tank full of Red Cherry Shrimp would be fun at the office.

    Choosing your aquaclear

Buy the biggest one you can afford or will fit on your tank. They have a very good flow control knob and you can set them to flow at a lesser rate if necessary. So if you have one that is "too big", you can set the flow rate down and benefit from the much larger media basket. More beneficial...

    What can I do with a 1g?

If they spend more time crawling around looking for food instead of filtering, then the food availability in the water column is not sufficient. Your shrimp never grew to their full potential because they basically slowly starved to death. They need a strong current and water that has enough...

biological filtration competes with the fish for oxygent?

You are over-thinking this. Your two E-400's will provide enough water movement to ensure that the water is fully oxygenated. Yes the bacteria do use oxygen to convert NH3 (ammonia) into NO3 (nitrate). That oxygen has to come from somewhere and it comes from the oxygen in the aquarium...

    small goldish in my tank?

Genesis 2:15 : 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. Your mom needs to realize that her God demands that she properly care for these goldfish that she purchased for a one-time presentation. Anything less than ensuring that these fish...

    Synodontis Lace Catfish

The little ones I have seen repeatedly at Wal-Mart have always been the nigriventis. They are best kept in schools and are very shy. I had an ich outbreak a year ago that wiped out my school and I have only one left which I see about once a month. They like to hide and mostly feed at night...

Looking for alternative sources for fish in middle TN (Nashville area)

If you are going to make the serious commitment to keep discus, then you should buy your fish directly from a very experienced breeder. The best ones will ship them directly to you and you will be getting guaranteed quality stock. These fish are very sensitive and I would not want my new...

    The BIO-Wheel

Don't listen to these people. Keep as many fish as you want in your aquarium. And if you ever have any water problems, just go to the local fish store and find a bottle of chemicals to fix the problem. Regular water changes and carefully planned stocking levels are over-rated. People who...

    Schooling Tetras

You are probably going off of the "6 fish makes a school" advice so often tossed around here. Yes, 6 will school together some of the time, but you'll be super impressed with the schooling behavior when you have 10,20,30 or more. In that 135 gallon tank, you could have one amazing school...

    brine eggs?

The quality of brine shrimp eggs varies widely. If you bought a little tube from the pet store, the hatch rate will generally be pretty low. I was amazed the first time I tried the 90% hatch rate eggs. In comparison, the tube I bought at the pet store probably only had 10% or less hatch...

    Proper care for Otto's

The temperature requirements for otos and your native fish are different. The natives need colder water than the oto is going to like. I have found otos to be rather fragile at first. This is mostly due to the fact that they are snatched from the wild and arrive at the stores mostly starved...

What do you think about this? (almond leaves)

If you have a substrate that is adding a lot of buffering capacity to your water, it will be basically impossible to bring the pH down significantly with natural things like leaves or driftwood. Every bit of acid the leaves and wood produce will be neutralized by the buffers in the water.

    sinking driftwood...

Preparing driftwood can be a long process. Best just to let it soak in a place where you will forget about it for a month or 2. I've got 3 big pieces soaking in an unused 55 gal that I'll probably do something with in June.

emperor 400 duel cartrige and sleeves (bio wheel)

If it is always a little bit cloudy from very small particles that get through the blue filter cartridges, try stuffing the grey media baskets with the white polyester filter floss. You can buy it either in the fish store or pay a LOT less for a LOT more by purchasing 100% hypoallergenic...

    Algae Problem need help!

Save your money on chemicals/antibiotics/etc. Cyanobacteria can be completely eliminated by a 3 day blackout. I've done this several times with great success. I do 3 days and 4 nights and when I unveil the tank every bit of that awful stuff is gone gone gone. Make sure not to peek at...

Friend of a Friend Selling 90 Gallon tank...some questions...

That is a great deal. Go get that tank. Some of the fish are incompatible and it is a bit overstocked. The pleco should not be with african cichlids because the two types of fish prefer different water conditons. Unless these are the type of fish you want, I would consider giving most of...

How about this for lighting? pic inside

Also consider the energy costs of whatever lighting you are using. When you add it up, you will likely find that spending more up front for compact fluorescent lighting is the cheapest way to go.
