    Sick snail?

I'm happy to report that the snail I was so concerned about has returned to his old self. He's eating, roaming all over the tank, and even parasnailing. Sadly, I have no idea why he behaved so out-of-character for so long.

    Frogs?

Thanks for all the replies! It seems I have an African dwarf frog. I think I'll isolate him in a floating breeder tank until I get him to accept food. Also, I'll provide a floating plant for him to rest on if he needs to. Thanks, again.

    Frogs?

Does anyone know what kind of frog Walmart sells? I bought one with the understanding that it would eat flake food. I never saw it eat anything. In a week, it was dead. I need to know more about this frog before I buy another one.

    plant die-off

I had hoped to maintain the algae wall for any rcs little ones to feed on. Although, that's probably not going to happen. I can't seem to be able to keep the adults for more than a few months.

    plant die-off

My water params are ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 10 ppm, GH 150 ppm, KH 300 ppm, pH 7.8. Looks OK to me. I have only plastic plants, a few red cherry shrimp and a snail in addition to the java moss. My lighting is two compact fluorescent bulbs, 13 watts apiece.

    plant die-off

My java moss ball has come loose from its anchor, turned brown and is separating. Also, the blanket of algae on the back wall of the tank is disappearing. What's happening?

    Yikes!!!

    Whoa! That's just scary!

    Yikes!!!

I Googled "planaria" and, sure enough, that's what I have. I'll do a water change and gravel vac right away. Should I scrape the little buggers off the sides before I do the vac?

    Yikes!!!

When I looked into my rcs tank last evening I noticed that one of the white specks on the glass was moving. I excitedly ran for my photographers loupe thinking that what I was seeing might be a baby rcs. What I saw through the loupe was a worm-like critter inching its way along like a snail...

    Pic of "sick snail"

Thanks to all for the ID! He's such a lovely creature, but I'm afraid he's on his way out. He's still just hanging out at the water line and I haven't seen him eat for days. Such a marked departure from his ususal behavior that I have to believe he's ill.

Here is a photo of my snail before he got sick. Can you tell what kind it is?

    Sick snail?

I haven't seen it eat for a couple days. It'll eat shrimp pellets and algae wafers. I only have 10 rcs left and they are quite willing to share. If it doesn't eat within the next couple days, I'll isolate it in a breeder trap.

    Sick snail?

It's a "mystery" snail I found at Walmart. He's been acting normally for at least a month, very active. The only other tankmates are rcs. Temp is 78, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 5 ppm. I use API test kits so I'm relying on the numbers being correct. I would not be so concerned if I hadn't...

    Sick snail?

My snail is hanging on the tank wall near the water line most of the time. The last snail I had that did that died in a few weeks. Is this behavior any indication of disease?

    First berried female!

Thanks for the tip, Wycco! I'll pick up some iodide and give it a try. It's worth a shot.

    First berried female!

Further update Nearly a week has gone by without a loss. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Of the ten that are left, four are saddled females. If I could keep the little rascals alive I'm sure they would multiply. Here's hoping!

    First berried female!

No, no water softener. Funny thing: I maintain my grandson's tank for him and I only get up there once every couple weeks and he has had a ghost shrimp thriving in his tank for several months. I can't keep them nearly that long. His is kept with goldfish and snails, mine with platies and...

    First berried female!

Follow-up A couple days after this posting this female was gone without a trace. Since then I've lost five of the most recent batch of fifteen. I lose one or two a week. I don't have a clue what's happening. I know I'm starting with good stock, my water params are always good, I don't...

    First berried female!

I'm sure! The reason I can be so sure that I can recognize her is because she is so much bigger than all the other females. I believe she's the sole surviving member of the fifteen that I received the middle of January. I found her again this AM, no saddle and no berries.
