It should be quite easy to tell when your fish do not have enough room to swim around. It seems to me that we can also do much more for our fish than just provide clean water. We can provide them with an adequate group size and enough aquarium space so that they may thrive.

That's an opinion too.Is it? How do you know what they like? Did you ask them? I'm not saying stuff a dozen mollies in a 5 gallon tank, but who really knows if they enjoy/dislike a lot of other fish? Is there any scientific data to show one way or the other? I would really like to see it if there is. I will admit that it's not opinion if it has been proven, but as far as I know it hasn't been
Sometime non-verbal cues are the most important. You can tell a lot about fish through their behavior. Can you not tell what your fish like to eat, by whether they eat it or not? Can you not tell if a fish likes bright light, by whether it hides when the light is on or not? There are many non-verbal ways by which fish show they like or dislike something: by flaring, through color changes, by hiding, through swimming patterns, by mating behavior, by sulking and so on.

Note my original post did not mention anything about if fish liked or disliked a lot of other fish...you said that. I said it easy to tell if your fish is to big for the aquarium it is in by whether it has room to swim or not. I then pointed out that we can do more than just keep the water clean; we can keep our fish in proper group sizes and proper sized aquariums so that the fish will thrive.
I believe that the years and years of fish keepers observations and experiences can be just as valuable as any scientists findings.rallysman said:
How about a nice platy?im setting up a ten gal for my brother,it already has a betta,what would be a good fish to go with him? I dont want any schooling fish,something medium sized and pretty hardy.

Yeah, that's the problem. I had a platy in with one of my bettas (came extra for free in a bag of something else), and the platy harrassed the betta until the betta got angry and killed it.
yep. I had to return my platies when i found out their favorite nighttime game was pick the fins off the betta.
I agree, a ram would be nice.
