Okay, so I'm starting two tanks at the same time, big deal... when I restart my 30, then you can complain.

So, I was looking at possible fish for my 20gal, and noticed the lovely Scarlet Gem Badis(SGB), and I think I want to try them out now...

So, heres the set up I have in mind:

10 gallon tank. Marineland Penguin 200 or 150 (whichever is best). Drift wood that I can get with ease, some fake plants (I have no good lights to get real ones) sand substrait. 2 male, 2 female SGBs to finish it off. An airstone for good measure.

So, would I be able to work that tank? And if you have any ideas for cheap lighting for a ten gal, please do tell.

I said this on another thread-I might be wrong, but aren't badis brackish

Scarlet badis are adorable little fishes. I love them. If I could find females I'd put them in my paludarium as a species tank. A 10 gallon would be perfect for about 4 of them, while their bioload is small, they will want to have their own territories, so best not to overcrowd them.

As for lighting, try one of those steel domed single bulb shop lights, the ones with the little clamp and throw a 26 watt CFL 6500k in it, they sell them at walmart, a 2-pack for about $7. I bet you'd be able to grow plants under that. Right now over my 40 breeder I have a hood that I built and wired for 6 screw-in sockets. I have 2 13w 6500k CFLs and 2 26 watt. My plants are doing great, and will do better with the DIY CO2 I'll be adding in a few days.

Thanks! It's nice to know they will be okay in a 10gal, and it's really nice to see another way to get lighting :)

Dario dario is completely FW unless I'm missing something...

I'm with Taari, CFLs are an easy and cheap way to make a 10 gallon low-light plant friendly. I used this hood with the biggest CFLs I could find instead of incandescents...http://www.walmart.com/ip/Aqua-Culture-Aquarium-Hood-Incandescent-10-Gallon-Pets/10311306

oh lol, I have 2 of those hoods with flurecent bulbs (14 whats each) lighting up my tanks already! I'll just grab another and some better bulbs. Thanks :P

Or... would this work with a powerful bulb, or is it overkill?

I used two of those over my 10g CP tank and a slight issue is that the way the clamps work the lights end up being farther away as opposed to just over the water surface if you use the hood. Seeing as the reflector "shells" aren't all that great and you get significant re-strike from CFLs already you probably would end up losing a decent amount of light before it actually goes through the water. You might be able to lay the clamp lights flat on a glass top but you would then want to get bulbs so that they don't stick out of the "shell" and so they actually do lay flat, if you understand what I'm saying. The hoods have a crappy reflector as it is but there is also less space the light has to travel through anyways. I can't remember exactly what wattage of light I used but I got the absolute biggest that fit in with the splash guards still in tact. I was able to grow java fern, anubias, crypts, vals, pennywort and rotala indica without issues. Really up to you and since the lighting options are pretty cheap you could easily fool around to see what fits...

I always just set the clamp light right face down on my lids, or hang it by the cord. The clamps don't work very well on the side of an aquarium.
