thats exactly what a emergency fund is for. in case unexpected things pop up you didnt plan for..... better you learn it now vs later in life.

can someone please post a pic of this fish we are discussing, never heard of it and I'm at work so google isn't an option atm. I've seen badis before but I don't think the same one.

dario dario never heard them called scarlet gem before common name normally is just scarlet badis. its about 1 inch and looks great.

Yes, yes, I have $40 now so I can get the medicine, got pre-paid for watching the house next week (thank god) so I will be getting the medicinal flakes tomorrow and will be saving as much as possible for emergencies later. However, if I can find Scarlet Badis then I will get them... after the current situation has been handled. I now have 2 tanks with probably sick fish and 1 with a definitly sick fish, so I have enough on my hands as it is.
Just to mention a few things about this fish just to make sure you know. It is VERY difficult to find females. Females will often be mixed into shipments but they can be really tough to tell from colored down males.
Also these guys tend to only eat live food. I never had any luck getting mine to eat anything if it didn't move. Mine LOVED white worms which are pretty easy to keep.
I also had trouble getting a hold of healthy ones. They would look fine in the store but would eventually die despite eating well. I ended up with 1 very healthy male. I believe the ones I were getting had internal parasites. So be careful of your source. I would order some from someone on the forum. Both MG and Msjinkzd have very healthy fish. I made the mistake of getting mine from the LFS. They didn't know how to feed them there and had huge loses.
They are an awesome little fish though!

I would use a syringe to suck out a clump of blackworms from the bag and put it in a smaller container with a little extra water and hand pick out the smallest black worms, ones that were only 1/4-1/2" long or so, and then spot feed my Scarlet Badis with the syringe, even though he was the only fish in the tank, he wouldn't be able to find the worms if I didn't stick them right infront of his nose.
