10g tank decoration ideas

I said some of this in pms.

Ground "cover" plants without co2 & "good" lighting are very difficult. I go for a more sparse look. Small crypts (parva is not easy), tiny sword plants (not most that you see for sale, those get HUGE!!).

dougall is a mostly high tech plant grower; I'm the opposite, low tech only. I'm sure his tanks look better than mine...but he has to work harder & invest more $$ on both plants & equipment ;) you know you do dougall :D

You don't need supplemental CO2 to grow a carpet, just need to choose the right plants.

There are lots of things that need defining.. like what is meant by ground cover/carpet? What about high tech?

There's not much that is going to grow well, at the substrate, in a new tank, without providing some sort of nutrition for the plants.

For faster growing, I'd suggest some species of microsword as long as it doesn't get taller than wanted.. but using soil, aquasoil or root tabs as well.

And I promise I'm not only a high tech plant guy....

No, you're not my only high tech plant friend, dougall, :D ! I do belong to a plant club too & there are many of "your tech kind" ;) ...they are interesting folks (mostly men in my experience...hmm...why is that?). They grow some very pretty plants (& often meticulous tankscapes) that I can never more than kill in a matter of weeks...no matter how "easy" you or they tell me they are...I'm just trying to be the "voice of reason?" or I think the "voice of easy maintenance"?? might be more accurate...LOL

There are so many different tank styles, & they all can be attractive...to my eye anyway (well maybe not Sponge Bob or Star Trek for too long... but even then for a short while...). But not to my willing upkeep skills & equipment maintenance...I'm lame & I admit it. 2-3 hours/week of weed & water change with some filter cleaning is about my limit these days but I only have 3 biggish tanks (55g, 75g & 110g?), but only 2 have fish...& not very many...

LOL!

trust me fishorama if its something that you'll kill in a matter of weeks for me it's going to turn into a matter of days XD

im thinking about a japanese theme maybe? or a tank with these moss-covered hills and small gravel paths. i will add shelves of rock to the back for the tetras (theyre still around) just in case my betta gets hangry....! ;)

if you have any decorating ideas let me know please im not very creative lol

and i just ran into a problem i just realized the java moss could RUIN my filter so i need some help there. maybe just put the filter sideways? or just hide it behind a rock shelf? but im worried if a tetra gets nosy and wanders into the filter, uh oh.... or maybe cover one part with cotton cloth using silicone?

I (& many of us) use a sponge prefilter over an HOB intake...but...I don't think I saw a filter intake in your small betta tank...Maybe you need to tell us more about your tank...Umm, It's not hard to do...if you have a filter...You know we want to help you, even if we you tease a bit...:p

I've probably killed more plants than you can likely imagine, lol...but that's part of the joy of my plant club!! No shame to killing plants (well, most times, lol!) Maybe just a tiny stigma, I set the low bar on plant growing, but still, I'm happy with the way my tanks look...mostly...of course they coud be better...but it's really live & learn what works for you & for me in our different conditions 👍

I'm not sure I'd accuse moss of "ruining my filter" but maybe...tell us more. Can you post pics of what you consider a "Japanese" style tank? All I can think of right now are dwarf Japanese maple trees in my yard...we've mostly killed them off, just too close to the foundations...not good...but for a fish tank...well, we need more info...I'm not sure what to suggest right now...but I'll think about it for tomorrow after my football morning game.

Happy New Year!

I mean I don't only do high tech .. I only have one tank currently using CO2.. 10+ more are low tech, no CO2 etc.

I like expensive lights because of their color spectrum rather than the actual power from them.

Most high tech plant folks are guys just because the odds are stacked that way just based on the ratio of folks that keep aquariums.. I can't help that.

Note the president and technical editor for the AGA are both women though.

Gosh, !

I'm by no means suggesting to rush out and start using CO2, I'm not sure I even said that plants were the only way to go.

But they are an option.. just expensive if you have to buy them and then they don't survive.

My suggestion would likely be do something natural looking with cheap rocks, then try a cheap plant once it is established and see how it does. Don't add to the stress of a new aquarium by having to keep plants alive too...

Some plants are far easier to keep than others.

im doing java ferns and java moss because those two need little to no fertilizer (even if they do need little, the amount my neons...um....you know, is probably enough "fertilizer") and are easy to keep. the moss does grow quick though. so do i literally just go in with scissors and cut it?

Yes, just cut off what you want removed. I use it as a chance to just cut out anything that gets trapped in there.

Be sure that you leave it attached, and be sure to catch anything that you cut off.. otherwise it is likely to grow somewhere you don't want it.. Murphy's law and all

And I wouldn't expect any need to fertilize with java ferns and moss.. but I would still change water just to replenish any minerals that aren't going to come from fish waste.

i have a auestion
my betta is recovering from fin rot and his fins have started growing back recently. only when they grow they appear to be clear and not the red color he is. is he sick? i put him in a tank by himself just in case my betta is sick.
