120 Gallon Community Fish Tank Stocking Ideas

I have had good luck with craigslist. Though you could also turn them into your local store for credit toward your new stock.

so I would like to order the FX5 and the filter media. I don't know what media to get and which tray to put it. I was thinking of this but I don't know much about canister filters so all help is appreciated.

Top Basket - Foam, PreFilter Media and 100-grams (1 bag) of Carbon
Middle Basket - Foam and what else?
Bottom Basket - Foam and Biomax Bio Rings (How many grams?)

This is the stock:

1 x Red Tailed Black Shark (Epalzeorhynchos bicolor)
5 x Clown Loaches (Chromobotia macracanthus)
1 x Spotted Hillstream Loach (Gastromyzon punctulatus)
8 x Roseline Sharks (Puntius denisonii)
20 x Tiger Barb (Puntius tetrazona)
5 x Glo Fish (Danio rerio)
2 x Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.)

Please remember that any suggestions are welcome especially about the media for the fx5 and stocking list for the tank. Thanks

Looks good....just a thought, though....5 glo fish are gonna be lost in a 125. I would either up the numbers or ditch them all together. Plus, they are pretty expensive IMO. I think you could easily up them to 10-12 and still be fine. Not that much difference for a 125.

Sorry I can't help with the FX5, never had one. Only suggestion is you don't really need carbon. I don't think most people use it. I only use it to remove meds.

Yea I only put those in because I have them in one of my other tank already. I might buy 5-7 more like you said thank you.

Ok so now I need to order some powerheads. I already have one and it is a Hydor Koralia 3 850gph and I need one or two more. Any recommendations? Also what should I get for substrate? Sand or gravel? Thanks in advance!

I can't help you with selecting powerhead sorry.

For substrate for a tank that large would expensive if you picked it up at a pet shop. I would opt for Black Diamond sand blasting grit if you want a dark substrate or Pool filter sand if you want a light colored one.

Since everyone has already answered about the stock, I was just curious, you said "The other two tanks I have are a 55 gallon tank with a small Oscar" Where is the oscar going? You don't plan to keep him in the 55, do you? He'd be better off in the 120 gallon by himself or with a few tank mates, but the 55 is far too small for him, I'm sure as you know, they grow QUICK!

IME, Octocinclus is a better choice than the Chinese Algea Eaters.

Yes I have one small Oscar in my 55 gallon tank. I understand that I will need to upgrade to a 75-90 gallon tank when he gets bigger.
