120 Gallon Community Fish Tank Stocking Ideas

I can't help you with selecting powerhead sorry.

For substrate for a tank that large would expensive if you picked it up at a pet shop. I would opt for Black Diamond sand blasting grit if you want a dark substrate or Pool filter sand if you want a light colored one.

Ok thank you. I think I am going to go with a lighter color sand so most likely PFS.

Where does everyone get their rocks and driftwood from? My LFS's have very poor selections...

Also I need to know what power heads to get. I have one Hydor Karalia 3 850gph and I need probably 1 or 2 more.

All suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

You can try and look online for some driftwood. I don't have a very big selection of anything around me, so the internet is my source for supplies.

I guess it depends on how quiet you want the powerhead. Do you want a quiet one like the koralia or it doesn't matter? Maxi-jet powerheads are good or the Aquatop ones but they are loud. I had two koralias in my river tank as I have the tank in my room and can't sleep with all that noise from the other powerheads.

What kind of driftwood are you looking for? Bob's Tropical plants (Mgamer) sells some. I have manzanita in mine from Manzman. Both sellers can be found in the classified section of the forum.

You might want to re-think the gastromyzon. I found they are better in groups and would need a lot of current or they are not active. The heater might be a problem too as gastromyzons, from my experience, prefer cooler temps (72F or high 60s). They rarely went onto the sand and stayed either on rocks or the glass walls. Plus they need green algae and don't seem to touch the brown. I pick up my rocks from lakes/rivers around here. You just have to know which ones are safe to use.

I am not sure it really depends on how loud the Maxijets are. They are substantially cheaper than koralia but I don't mind spending the extra money if there is a huge difference in noise. My tanks are on the first floor and the bedrooms are above it on the second floor so it noise shouldnt be a problem but I guess you don't know until you try it. What gph should I get? And should I get 1 or 2?

I honestly didn't know there were different kinds of driftwood. I will check out the sites that you gave me. Thanks

And thanks for the info on the gastromyzon. I guess I won't get it as I want all my fish to be happy and it sounds like my tank won't provide all the needs for that fish. Should I just get another clown loach instead?

Just a note on the Red Tailed Shark.
Beautiful creature, really one of my favourite fish.
I had an 80Gal heavily planted tank with lots of driftwood and hiding places. I started with two of these sharks. It was evident one was being bullied RELENTLESSLY. Maybe I made a mistake by removing the one that was being bullied but the other was bigger so I kept only the one. For a while things were ok. Then it grew a little bit and it got very very angry indeed. It's attentions turned to all the other fish in the tank and it was again relentless. I had to setup a tank just for him because the LFS didn't have anywhere for it.

Lovely fish indeed but mine could only be described as a psycho who was suitable only for tank mates larger than it and it would help if those tank mates have a bit of fight back in them.! Mine was an utter terror....

Ok so I have decided to go with the Hydor Koralia Powerhead. I just need to know which one to get. The 750, 1050, or 1400 gph? Also should I get one or two? Thanks

In my opinion, go with the highest one depending on how much your livestock will like the current, if you choose to only get one. If they are going to like the current, maybe go with 2 1050GPH. I think one should be ok if you're just looking to have it be used as water movement on the opposite side of the filter. Also, just stick to the 5 clown loaches as they do get big and you are planning to add other bottom dwellers.

Ok thanks. Sorry I forgot to mention that I already have a hydor Koralia 3 750gph. So would you still recommend I get a one Hydor Koralia 1400gph or two Hydor Koralia 1050s?
